The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.


This is a Forestry Technician (Recreation) on the recreation staff in the Black Kettle National Grasslands, Cheyenne, OK.  The position is responsible for overseeing and independently performing the following duties: Maintaining recreation sites, and collecting recreation site fees, oversee maintenance operations to assure compliance with plans and/or service contracts, inspect sites to determine the need for repair and/or replaceement of objects and/or structures, etc.

 Inspects recreation sites on a regular basis to ensure they are clean, safe and ready for use. Conducts repairs and maintenance as needed. Recommends corrective actions for larger maintenance projects. Collects and compiles data to develop and maintain written records of activities such as site inspection and maintenance, tracking violations of Forest Service regulations for recreation, and tracking visitors (number and type of use). Follows written and oral instructions to perform forestry support duties such as recreation area maintenance. Applies knowledge of forestry methods and techniques to evaluate and inspect maintenance projects. Independently plans the daily work including, task sequence, and appropriate work methods and equipment. Develops schedules to perform recreational use work to meet established timelines and deadlines. Is able to determine the proper tool for assigned tasks. Cleans and maintains tools after use. Reports broken tools to supervisor for replacement.

 You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements. 

One year of specialized experience at the GS-04 level. Examples of specialized experience are: Performed crew based forestry related support work, such as recreation trail or recreation facility construction and/or maintenance projects; and/or conducted routine procedural tasks using work methods and techniques that were well established.  

OR 

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown or GS-4 any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science.. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

A Combination of Education and experience listed above.

You will be evaluated based on the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
