JOB SUMMARY:

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

This position is located in Region 6, on the Cle Elum Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Cle Elum, Washington.  For additional information about the duties of the position, please contact Nance Jones at 509-852-1011 or email at najones@fs.fed.us.

This is a Visitor Information Services Assistant position and is responsible for providing customer service and information of both general and/or technical nature in support of a variety of Forest Service activities and programs.  This position is also responsible as a district collection officer for the sale of forest maps, passes and product permits.

Work Schedule Details: This position is a Permanent Seasonal position. The incumbent will be guaranteed 13 pay periods of full-time work.  However, there may be a possibility to work more. You will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status for the remainder of the year.

• Assists in developing specific objectives for interpretive programs and displays, providing input to the annual plan of work.

 • Inventories and prepares reports on the annual volumes of use, trends in public information needs, and public response to existing information output.

 • Makes regular visits to the various public schools and social groups. Makes presentations on subjects such as fire safety, environmental awareness, recreation activities, and litter prevention.

• Meets visitors and independently replies, either verbally or in writing, to phone and mail inquiries requesting general information about Forest Service activities, programs, and policies. Responds to a variety of questions covering all services that the forest/district may offer.

• Responsible as the forest/district collection officer for the sale of forest maps, passs and product permits. Maintains accurate records of sales to account for monies collected; prepares bill for collections, and transfers funds in a timely and accurate manner to lockbox.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-4: One year of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work which provided the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position being filled;

OR Associate's degree

OR Two years of successfully completed education above high school; and/or combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level;

OR Bachelor's degree

OR 4 years of successfully completed education above high school; and/or combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours} and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Examples of specialized experience are:  Assists in developing specific objectives for interpretive programs and displays, providing input to the annual plan of work; Accompanies a higher graded worker and makes regular visits to the various public schools and social groups. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
