These positions are located at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and will be working on inventory and removal of non-native plants throughout the Lakeshore.  Government housing is not available.  This work of this position is not to exceed one year and may be extended for one additional year with no hours limit per year.

GS-5 technicians will work as part of field crews under the direction of the national lakeshore's Natural Resources Program Manager with guidance from lead field technicians. Field work will consist of habitat management activities associated with invasive plant control and/or restoring disturbed natural areas. Work will include using tools and operating equipment such as hand saws, loppers, pruners, sprayers, chainsaws, and/or brushcutters to control invasive plants. Other activities may include collecting and installing seeds and plants, as well as installing and maintaining fencing and signs using shovels, post drivers, posthole diggers, drills, and other hand tools. These positions require application of herbicides for vegetation control, carrying 40 pounds of tools and equipment, strenuous manual labor, working primarily outdoors under a variety of weather conditions, exposure to poisonous plants, and exposure to biting and stinging insects. Technicians will also collect data related to the work completed, and map work sites using Global Positioning System Units.

Operates government vehicles on an incidental basis.

Area Information:

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan approximately 50-60 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois. Small towns and resort communities on the beaches of Lake Michigan and farms interspersed with large tracts of woodlands and wetlands surround the Lakeshore. An abundance of cultural and recreational activities are available year-round. The area has weather typical of the Midwest, with temperatures normally ranging from 0 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. No government housing available; however, many reasonably priced houses and rental properties exist in the surrounding communities. All services are available.

To be eligible for this position, you must possess the following specialized experience and/or education. Experience may have been gained in the public or private sector and may have been paid or unpaid.

Specialized Experience - 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent. Specialized experience demonstrates that you are able to perform successfully the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: assisting in research work in a greenhouse or other controlled environment, performing plant surveys; assisting in site restoration work; removing non-native plant species; identifying and monitoring plant species', etc.

OR

Education - Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours must be directly related to this position, i.e. botany, silviculture, forest ecology, plant ecology, etc. To demonstrate that you are qualified based upon education, you MUST provide a copy of your transcripts or a list of college courses which includes your name, the school's name and address, title and course number of each course, # of semester/quarter hours for each course, and grade for each course plus your class ranking and/or grade point average.

OR

Combination of Specialized Experience and Education - A combination of specialized experience and education may be considered qualifying. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable as specialized experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • You must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license as an incidental driver.
  • You will be required to have a favorably adjudicated background investigation, including an FBI fingerprint check and credit history check. 
  • You will be required to wear the NPS uniform in accordance with NPS policy.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your application will be evaluated based upon the following factors:

  1. Knowledge of, and ability in non-native plant control using manual, mechanical, and chemical techniques.
  2. Knowledge of plant identification
  3. Ability to collect, calculate, and record data.
  4. Ability to conduct fieldwork as a member of a team or crew.
  5. If you are automatically rated among the best qualified for this job, a review of your application materials may be made to verify your qualifications and self-rating.  Category rating procedures will be used. Candidates will be ranked into 3 categories:

  • Best Qualified - Applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
  • Well Qualified - Applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minnimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
  • Qualified - Applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job.

Qualified candidates will be referred to the selecting official for further consideration in the following order: Best Qualified candidates entitled to 10 or 5 point veterans preference then other Best Qualified candidates; Well Qualified candidates entitled to 10 or 5 point veterans preference then other Well Qualified candidates; Qualified candidates entitled to  10 or 5 point veterans preference then other Qualified candidates.

This appointment will initially be for no more than 1 year, however it may be extended for additional year, without hours limit, without further competition. 

As a temporary employee, you will be eligible to earn annual and sick leave if you work over 90 days.
