The role of this position is to independently provide well-established professional nurse outpatient, inpatient, and emergency care procedures to patients assigned in an outpatient or inpatient unit.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.  Typical work assignments include:

 - Assists Medical Officer in outpatient  and emergency care.

 - Prepares patients for surgical and/or diagnostic procedures.

 - Takes medical history.

 - Coordinates the treatment of acutely ill or injured patients.

 - Gives intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections.

 - Observes and assesses patient's clinical condition.

 - Evaluates and instructs patients.

 - Keeps logs, boards, records and charts current.

 - Trains health services technicians on ward procedures and practices.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must meet the basic criteria outlined below: A degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed;

AND An active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the basic criteria, all applicants must have: at least 1 full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 level in the federal service) providing professional nursing care to a variety of patients; assessing patient's needs for nursing care, planning for nursing care interventions, and assessing the effectiveness of nursing interventions; monitoring and assessing patients for changes in condition; administering oxygen, IV fluids, and medications; preparing patients for surgical and/or diagnostic procedures; assisting with minor surgical procedures, diagnostic tests, and dressing changes; observing postoperative patients; and setting up, operating and monitoring specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, defibrillators, etc.

OR completed all the requirements for a Master's degree or have 2 full years (36 semester hours or the equivalent) of progressively higher level graduate education in nursing OR Have a combination of directly related work experience and graduate level education.

When an applicant has less than one year of specialized experience as described above, he or she may combine successfully completed graduate-level education with experience to meet the total qualification requirements. Forty hours of work per week in the specialized field for 12 months is equivalent to 1 year of full-time experience, and, generally, 18 graduate semester hours is equivalent to 1 full-time year of graduate study (your school and department determine what constitutes 1 full-time year of graduate study).

GS-9 applicants must have completed more than 1 full year of graduate level education in order to use this option to qualify. The applicants percentage of specialized work experience (for example, 6 months equals 50%) and the percentage of graduate study (for example, 27 graduate hours for a GS-9 equals 50% where 18 graduate hours constitute a full-time year) must total at least 100%.
