RN- Assistant Nurse Manager- General Medicine



Tour of Duty:  Monday-Friday 7:30AM-4PM; may include rotation to other tours, weekends, holidays. Alternate work schedule may be available. 




The Assistant Nurse Manager of a general medicine nursing unit functions under the direction of the respective Nurse Manager. The ANM performs in a dual role as the charge nurse, and is responsible for the management and evaluation of patient care services within their respective unit. She/he professionally collaborates with the Nurse Manager and other multidisciplinary members to manage and maintain the delivery of quality patient care on the unit.


His/her responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1.    Maintaining the physical organization and safety of the environment.

2.    Monitoring compliance with documentation procedures and standards.

3.    Demonstrating the ability to organize and coordinate daily “operations.”

4.    Demonstrating effective interpersonal and interdisciplinary communication skills.

  1. Demonstrates competencies specific to caring for acutely ill patients, including patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring. 


Additional responsibilities of the Assistant Nurse Manager are as follows:

1.    Participates, under the direction of the Nurse Manager, in the overall management, development, and supervision of a specific group of nursing personnel in accordance with the philosophy and standards of the OCL and MEDVAMC.

2.    Maintains collaborative relationships with and serves as a role model to all members of the clinical nursing staff, unit management team, and medical staff.

3.    Develops and maintains working relationships with individuals within nursing and ancillary hospital departments for the purpose of insuring quality patient care and service excellence.


The Assistant Nurse Manager functions as a resource clinically, administratively, educationally, and professionally. The Assistant Nurse Manager also supports opportunities for research, and participates in patient care programs as requested. The Assistant Nurse Manager reports to the Nurse Manager of the respective unit. The Nurse Manager is held accountable for implementation of all unit policies and procedures

Education and Experience

·   BSN Degree with 3 to 5 years successful nursing practice.

 ·   Masters Degree in Nursing or related field and approximately 2 to 3 years successful nursing practice preferred.

Education and Experience

1.    BSN and approximately 3 to 5 years successful nursing practice. [Required]

2.    MSN or related field with a BSN and approximately 2 years of successful nursing practice. [Preferred]

3.    Two years of leadership and charge nurse experience. [Required]

4.    You must have a MINIMUM of two years of RECENT CRITICAL CARE, Intermediate Nursing Experience.  (This Nursing ICU experience must have occurred within the past 2 years.) [PREFERRED]

 Citizen of the United States.  Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.    Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.   Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.     Education/Experience Requirements: 

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. 
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
