This position is located in the Dairy and Egg Branch, Division of Plant and Dairy Food Safety, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). The incumbent will be responsible for resolving a broad range of issues concerning the application of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enabling legislation, pertinent regulations, international standards and/or general legislation affecting the operation of the Center and/or Agency.

  • Serves as a consultant and provides guidance on regulatory and compliance issues pertaining to gelatin and collagen certification, and FDA-regulated meat and animal derived products and technology.
  • Resolves unusual or complex issues relating to product safety policies and procedures.
  • Identifies areas for further study or improvements in FDA regulated meat and animal derived products and technology.
  • Reviews and assesses emerging, complex, or precedent-setting issues affecting policies, resources, and activities of gelatin and collagen certification, and meats and animal derived products.

GS-13:  All applicants must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA) . (Graduates of foreign veterinary medical schools not accredited by the AVMA Council on Education must refer to https://www.avma.org/Pages/home.aspx for requirements).

In addition to meeting the education requirements above, applicants must meet one of the following:

1) One year of progressively responsible professional veterinary experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, that included conducting research in the prevention and control of diseases which constitute a hazard to other animal species and to man; undertaking regulatory issues and international standards related to food safety principles and theories; preparing medical reports in professional journals or publications; and participating in lectures/seminars before professional groups.  (experience must be reflected in your resume)

OR

2) Ph.D degree in the area of specialization, including by not limited to, animal science, avian medicine, food safety, infectious diseases, veterinary clinical sciences, pathobiology, biomedical sciences, veterinary anatomy, veterinary preventive medicine, comparative biological sciences, epidemiology, veterinary parasitology, molecular veterinary biosciences, public health, microbiology, pathology, immunology, laboratory animal medicine, toxicology, wildlife, zoological animal medicine, or sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position. (must submit transcripts of this dual degree to support this option)

OR 

3) Successful completion of three years of an internship, residency program, or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position. (must submit documentation to support this option)

Conditions of Employment:

 

1. Time-in-Grade: Career or career-conditional current and former Federal employees who select to apply under merit promotion procedures must have served 52 weeks at the GS-13 or equivalent grade level.
