JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID), Office of Clinical Research Affairs (OCRA), in Bethesda, Md.  The NIAID conducts and supports biodefense research, basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.  The DMID supports extramural research related to the control and prevention of diseases caused by virtually all human infectious agents except HIV.

If selected for this position, you will perform the following duties:

 

Provide direct assistance and operational advice to leadership on matters related to the planning and management of the program.

 

Assist in the evaluation of the significance and scientific merit of proposed research projects.

 

Collect, assemble, review and evaluate preclinical and/or clinical data in support of requests (or concepts) for utilization of Division resources.

 

Act as liaison and communicate with the biomedical research community with regard to assigned grants and on related matters such as policies and procedures.

 

Act as a liaison and/or "trouble-shooter" in the Section/Branch for the resolution of operational, compliance or other problems impacting upon the accomplishment of project goals and objectives.

 

Synthesize reference material for a variety of presentations, briefings and position papers and prepare drafts of these documents which may be used.

 

Prepare correspondence and periodic reports on technical and business activities of Section/Branch contracts and in response to inquiries.

Basic Requirement:  Must have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree with major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.

 

To qualify for the GS-11:  You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following tasks:  screening periodic reports of health science grantees or contractors to spot problems, ascertain progress, and identify information of value for reports, writing health science research grant applications; providing assistance to prospective health science grantees; assisting in the preparation of comprehensive reports of health science study results; assisting staff with the preparation of funding plans and gathering necessary support documentation from health science applicants or grantees; and coordinating the compilation and preparation of periodic reports related to health science research.

 

OR

 

Have completed 3 years of progressively higher level education leading to a PhD. degree, or have a PhD. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field.

 

OR

 

Have a combination of graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

 

To qualify for the GS-12:  You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following tasks:  conducting health research; evaluating health science grant or contractor proposals/applications for completeness, sufficiency of data, justifications for equipment and similar matters used to determine scientific merit; monitoring public health contracts, grants or cooperative agreements to ensure compliance with requirements; preparing comprehensive reports of health science study results; assessing the adequacy and quality of data from health science studies; preparing funding plans and evaluating progress reports for funded health science projects; conducting on-site reviews of the operation of health science programs; and providing guidance and technical assistance regarding policies and procedures to grantees, contractors, applicants and other interested parties.
