National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is dedicated to stewardship of our nation's living marine resources, and the habitat on which they depend, through scientific research, management and enforcement. NMFS provides effective stewardship of these resources to benefit the nation, through domestic and international programs supporting coastal communities that depend upon them, while providing safe and healthy seafood to consumers and recreational opportunities for the public.
This position is located in the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC), Galveston Laboratory located in Galveston, TX. This position is covered by the Department of Commerce (DOC) Alternative Personnel System. This system replaces the federal GS pay system and structure. Under the System, positions are classified by career path, series, and pay band. The ZP-3 is equivalent to a GS-11/12. The person selected for this position will:
- Design, coordinate, and conduct scientifically valid quantitative biological modeling, and statistical data analysis from the Southeast Shrimp Fishery.
- Serve as the sole researcher or head of a team researching critical problems of shrimp management.
- Write scientific papers for publication.
- Serve as secondary laboratory contact for shrimp management and shrimp stock assessment projects.

Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. OR
Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements/education requirements, applicants must possess at least one year of specialized experience comparable in level of difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade/band level in the federal service (equivalent to GS-9/ZP-2). The specialized experience must be as detailed as possible in your resume as this will be a paramount importance when determining whether applicants are qualified with appropriate experience. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience analyzing data using advanced statistical analysis techniques and/or random effects modeling and applying advanced quantitative methods. Experience conducting statistical analyses of ecological data. Experience interacting with natural resource agencies; industry; environmental or scientific groups, as well as preparing and presenting scientific information orally and in writing. HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
We will review your resume, optional cover letter and supporting documentation to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications for the position.
