JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:    This position requires service aboard the Class 1 Hopper Dredge McFarland which generally operates along the east coast from Maine to Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico with occasional assignments in other areas.  Regular tour of duty is 15 consecutive work days, followed by 13 days off.  Residence on board the dredge during the work period is a necessary condition of employment.   While the dredge is operating, subsistence and quarters are provided free of charge. Transportation to and from the dredge is at the employees expense. When the dredge is operating in the Delaware River, access to and from Philadelphia International Airport is minutes from the Ships Home Dock which is located at the Fort Mifflin Project Office. Access from major roads is also within minutes (I95 & I76). Parking is provided at the Fort Mifflin field office for all Crew Members.

Position may be filled at either the 2rd Assistant Engineer (Diesel) WJ-4742-08 or the 3rd Assistant Engineer (Diesel), WJ-4742-07 level at management's discretion.

Duties: Working under the general supervision of Chief Engineer you will serve as 2nd Assistant Engineer (Diesel) on a 6,036 ton, 3140 cubic yard, 6,000 horsepower diesel seagoing hopper dredge. You will be responsible for the proper and continuous operation of machinery and service facilities of the dredge (i.e., main auxiliary engines, generator, pumps, etc.); make regular and/or special inspection of all operating machinery to insure proper function by observing temperature gauges, pressure indicators, oil levels, etc., and reactions of machinery; maintain operations log; operate all equipment in engine room; supervise a crew of oilers, cadets and others assigned to perform shift or other work; Assists Chief Engineer in making minor and major repairs to engines, auxiliaries, facilities, and equipment; receive and maintain an adequate supply of fuel oil; and keep records and reports on amounts received, consumed, and on hand.

Qualifications: In order to qualify for the 3rd Assistant Engineer (Diesel) WJ-4742-07 position, you must possess an active United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) at the 3rd Assistant Engineer, Diesel or motor vessels of unlimited horsepower and your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered.


Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to Lead or Supervise.

 

(1) Ability to Lead or Supervise (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT).

Physical Effort: Light to moderate effort is required while standing watch and performing repairs. This work will require you to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in uncomfortable positions. You will frequently and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to an occasionally over 50 pounds. 

 

Working Conditions : Works in engine room subject to loud noises and excessive temperatures. Will be exposed to hazards of cuts, bruises, burns, etc.
