The VA Palo Alto Health Care System is seeking a Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist to function as the Chief Radiology Administrator at the Palo Alto Division.  The incumbent will be responsible for planning, developing, overseeing, and directing all of the programmed segments of the Radiology Service to assure that the service mission, functions, projects, and activities are enforced and executed.  He/she supports the Chief of Radiology Service, who provides direct supervision of the incumbent and position.  The incumbent directly oversees the PACS Administrator, Program Analyst, Quality Manager, Scheduling Team, and Film Archivists with GS grades ranging from GS-5 to GS-12.  The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that all service performance monitors are monitored and are met at a fully successful rate.  The incumbent is stationed in Palo Alto but oversees Radiology Service activities at the Menlo Park and Livermore Divisions and the San Jose and Monterey Clinics.

  • Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.   
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) (R).
  • Education: Applicants must have completed a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiology Technology (JRCERT).
  • Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English.


Experience: Completion of 1 year of full-time experience comparable to the next lower grade level.  To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as "core competencies") associated with current radiologic technology practice.  This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of 1 year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.  Qualifying experience may have been gained in a supervisory, lead or quality control capacity as a diagnostic radiologic technologist; planning or assisting in the establishment of a completely integrated radiologic technology program at a medical center or comparable facility; or in the management or administration of a radiologic technology or closely related program.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1. Knowledge of the fiscal matters of the radiology program, including VHA funds and several additional fund controls, and ability to administer the scarce medical specialist contracts for professional services.

2. Skill to make short and long-term supply, equipment, and major space alteration recommendations and prepare specifications for radiographic equipment purchases and remodeling requests.

3. Ability to recommend program effectiveness improvements to meet VHA and Joint Commission accreditation standards.

4. Ability to make and implement major managerial recommendations for the radiology program, such as organizational improvements including changes to structure and delegation; maintain realistic cost/benefit ratios; and policy and procedure changes to improve service to patients.

5. Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties, including responsibility for assignment of work performed; performance evaluations; recommendations for appointment, awards, advancement, and when appropriate, disciplinary actions; and identification of continuing education and training needs.
