Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve consists of six physically separate sites and a park headquarters located in southeastern Louisiana and spread out over an area of 200 miles.  The sites in Lafayette, Thibodaux and Eunice interpret the Acadian culture of the area.  The Barataria Preserve in Marrero, Louisiana interprets the natural and cultural history of the uplands, swamps, and marshlands of the region.  Six miles southeast of New Orleans is the Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery, site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans and the final resting place for soldiers from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I and II and Vietnam.  Park headquarters and the French Quarter visitor center are located in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana.

These positions are located within the Barataria Preserve (2), the Chalmette Battlefield (3), Acadian Cultural Center (1), the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center (1) and park Headquarters (1) in the Maintenance Division.  Its primary purpose is to perform duties that are necessary for the proper operations, maintenance and repair of all buildings, utilities, equipment and other facilities within these units of the park.


This is a full-time temporary not-to-exceed 1039 hours seasonal maintenance position.  Appointment may be terminated at any time dependent on workload and funding.

Major Duties:  Perform a variety of facilities maintenance work in and around park grounds.  Assists with routine carpentry duties, operate riding lawn mowers, perform janitorial duties, routine plumbing tasks, drive trucks which typically have a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or less.  Follow directions; use standard tools and equipment and work as a member of a team.

You may be required to operate government (or private) motor vehicles as part of your official duties.  Prior to your first official motor vehicle operations, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State driver's license that is current and had not been revoked, suspended, cancelled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.   You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State Driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year or so  more frequently if management determines such need exists.  Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities) at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's license in your application/resume whether  you possess a valid State driver's license.

All Federal employees are required by PL 104-134 to have federal payments made by Direct Deposit. 
Selection for this position is subject favorable background investigation to determine suitability for Federal service.

Position is subject to weekend and holiday work.

Incumbent of this position will be required to wear an NPS uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards.

You may need to work outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions.

Government housing is NOT available.

Applicants who meet the basic eligibility requirements will be rated and ranked based on responses to the Assessment Questionnaire.  Any statements made on the Questionnaire should be fully substantiated on the application or resume.

Qualified candidates will be assigned a score between 70 and 100 plus points for veterans preference (5-10).

  • Well Qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job.
  • Qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job.

  1. Ability to perform maintenance worker duties without more than normal supervision (Screen-Out Element).
  2. Knowledge of technical practices, tools, and equipment related to basic carpentry work.
  3. Knowledge of technical practices, tools, and equipment related to basic roads, trails, fence and sign maintenance and repair.
  4. Knowledge of technical practices, tools, and equipment related to basic painting work.
  5. Knowledge of technical practices, tools, and equipment related to basic plumbing work.
  6. Ability to perform motor vehicle and general equipment operation and maintenance.
  7. Ability to perform custodial, janitorial, laborer and general grounds maintenance.
