Officially established in October 2006 the Orlando VA Medical Center is one of the Top 100 Companies in Central Florida for working families in the area. The Orlando VAMC system includes a 120-bed NHCU, a 60-bed Domiciliary, and a large, comprehensive satellite outpatient clinic and CBOC systems that includes facilities in Orlando (Lake Baldwin), Viera, Daytona Beach, Leesburg, Lake Nona, Clermont, Orange City and Kissimmee.  Clinic activities will transfer to Orlando's first – and the nation's largest - VA hospital in late 2013.  Located in the Medical City at Lake Nona, the new VA hospital will provide state-of-the-art inpatient and day clinic capabilities to benefit more than 90,000 Veteran enrollees throughout its six neighboring counties.   With the new hospital the Orlando VA's acute care, complex specialty care, and advanced diagnostic services will be available and consolidated for enrolled Veterans for the first time.  The Orlando VAMC is located in East-Central Florida, a family-oriented area with many local entertainment attractions, outdoor activities, beautifully landscaped communities, and some of the best primary schools, colleges and universities in the state.  Florida is recognized for its warm, sunny climate, beautiful beaches, abundant housing options, and no state income tax.  The Orlando VAMC is associated with the University of Central Florida and other local community colleges, with active affiliations in allied health programs such as Nursing, Pharmacy and Physical/Occupational Therapy.

These vacancies are advertised at the single grade at which this position will be filled above the full performance level.

The Supervisor, Medical Instrument Technician requires an exceptional level of skills and knowledge unique among diagnostic procedures not performed by physicians.   The incumbent must possess a thorough understanding of Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation in order to provide training to other Sonographers and Cardiology Fellows and/or perform when needed. The incumbent must have extensive knowledge of cardiovascular longitudinal and cross-section anatomy and pathology and the knowledge of common cardiac disorders/complications in order to know the location of abnormalities suspected by the referring physician.   Must possess sufficient knowledge of ECG interpretation to allow recognition of technical error and inadequate tracings so as to correct problems in quality control as they arise.   In addition, the incumbent must be highly skilled in exercise stress testing as to provide training and/or perform when necessary, skill in operating exercise equipment and troubleshooting technical problems and skill in taking blood pressures.   Must possess a thorough knowledge of indications for canceling and/or terminating a Stress Test in order to end potential complications or bring to immediate physician attention.


Tour of Duty:  Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30 pm.

**Candidates who posses a Registration by Cardio Vascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, (ARDMS) as Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications and a minimum 1 year of experience are HIGHLY desired**

For the GS-10 grade level, at least 1 year experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the KSAs that include:

   1. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.

   2. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

   3. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.

   4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

   1. Advance knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.

   2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.

   3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would imprve operations.

   4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer allocated budget.

   5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation;selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
