As Dean, you will apply a combination of leadership skills, management skills and experience in the business, technical and organizational aspects of ensuring that the goals and objectives of the University are met efficiently. As a member of the DAU leadership you will be expected to use innovation and expertise to guide the faculty and staff of the region to reach higher levels of quality and professionalism. In this position, you will be part of the DAU Executive Leadership and will help guide the University in accomplishing its mission, goals and initiatives and in creating, adjusting, and implementing the strategic plan to reach higher levels of customer and stakeholder satisfaction.  In this position, you will report directly to the Vice President.

Additionally, you will be responsible for the recruitment, development, and assessment of faculty assigned to the region and for ensuring that the educational, research, consulting and associated managerial service requirements are adequately supported. You will also be one of the University’s primary links to the acquisition population in this area and will be expected to work with local leaders in both government and private acquisition offices to create strong links of support between the DAU and the requirements of the acquisition workforce.

In support of these duties, you will be required to: (1) act in a leadership capacity directly responsible for the development, delivery and assessment of DAU products and services in the community; (2) direct and manage the operations of a dynamic faculty and staff; (3) prepare, defend, realign and forecast budgetary, personnel and scheduling requirements; and (4) collect, analyze and communicate environmental market changes and trends which would provide opportunities and challenges for the University.

You will be an advocate for the innovative application of the AT&L Performance Learning Model (PLM) to continuously shape and develop the professional competency and performance of all AT&L organizations that balance the learning assets we provide – training courses, knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and mission assistance – with local learning resources and infrastructure via a learning network.   You will play a leadership role to create and enable an acquisition system that consistently deliveries the outcomes it promises, and solve challenges quickly and creatively.

As a member of the DAU Executive Faculty Section, your annual performance evaluation will consider:  Leadership/Supervision, Contribution to Mission Accomplishment, Resource Management, Communications, Cooperation/ Teamwork, Customer Care and Technical Competence/Problem Solving.

Executive Faculty Section: Minimum Prerequisites

  1. You must possess a Master’s Degree in a related area from an accredited college or university and at least 15 years of experience in a significant leadership position in government, private industry, or an academic institution (Examples: Dean or Associate Dean, Flag Officer, CEO, Member of the DoD Senior Executive Service, or similar position).
  2. You must have specialized experience directly relating to the specific duties of the position to be filled and must demonstrate that you have the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully.
  3. Experience as a Program Executive Officer (or Deputy), Major Defense Acquisition System Program Manager, or equivalent executive-level acquisition leadership position in the government or industry.
  4. You must have achieved DAWIA Level III certification in the primary discipline or related discipline from the acquisition workforce or have the ability to obtain this certification within 24 months of appointment.


Successful candidates for consideration will show evidence of and be evaluated on the following:

  1. Acquisition knowledge and leadership/management experience: Demonstrated experience in managing and assessing the performance of major defense acquisition requirements and projects, including research, development, production and support, including workforce management and development. The dates when you held different acquisition leadership positions should be provided.
  2. Experience in teaching, consulting, research and curriculum development: Experience or demonstrated ability to convey complex managerial, technical and business concepts to students and major acquisition command personnel with different backgrounds and experiences.
  3. Experience leading change, building coalitions and communicating: Demonstrated ability to develop and implement an organizational vision that integrates enterprise and business unit missions, goals, priorities and values. Experience encompasses:  Building a shared vision, strategic planning, elements of quality management, encouragement of creative thinking and innovation, influencing others (including subordinates), expressing facts and ideas in a convincing manner, and negotiating with individuals and groups internally and externally.
  4. Experience leading people: Design and implementation of strategies and objectives that maximize employee potential, foster continuous learning, and achieve high ethical standards. Competency in conflict management, leading and leveraging diversity, developing others, and team building.
  5. Experience accomplishing mission and producing results: In addition to visioning, strategic planning, goal setting and problem solving, emphasis on accountability and continuous improvement.  Ability to make timely and effective decisions that accomplish mission, and achieve established performance plan tasks and results.
  6. Demonstrated resource management and business acumen: Lead and manage to acquire and administer human, financial, material and information resources in a manner that instills excellence, accomplishes mission and instills public trust. Knowledge and application of best business practices and tools.
  7. Knowledge/Awareness of the region’s acquisition environment: Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with the missions of the Major Acquisition Organizations/Services in the region.

  1. This is a Critical Acquisition position. 
  2. If selected for this position, you are subject to the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  3. You will be required to become a member of the Acquisition Corps. DoD instruction 5000.58R specifies qualification standards for Corps membership (waiver of some of these standards is possible in the limited circumstances described in the instruction). 
  4. You will be required to join the DAU Faculty Plan as established by Title 10 of the US Code.  This position is in the excepted service (non-career).  Candidates currently in the competitive service will be required to sign a statement indicating that they are leaving the competitive services voluntarily to accept an appointment in the excepted service.
  5. Initial appointment is made for a period of four years, conditional upon satisfactory completion of a DAU trial period of one year. Every year, as part of an annual review, consideration is given to extending the appointment; thus service at DAU can be extended indefinitely.
  6. If selected for this position, you MUST be able to begin work within 90 days of acceptance.
  7. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) expenses will NOT be paid.
