This position is ideal for a professional in emergency readiness who can maintain a continuous situational awareness of world events. This position starts at a salary of $74,872 per annum at the GS-12 level. PROMOTION POTENTIAL: GS-13  Future promotions will be dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and administrative approval.

 EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT:  For all nonbargaining unit positions, the following applies:  Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites.  All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.

Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

In this position, the incumbent becomes a key member of the Operations Division, the incumbent monitors world events that may impact federal response actions and coordinates planning and response with program and regional offices.  The incumbent receives, coordinates, and responds to events and inquiries.

Specific Duties:

• Monitors various government and private sector systems to gather and disseminate emergency information relating to the occurrence, magnitude, and impact of actual or potential emergencies.
• Analyzes facsimile, news reporting services, computer based systems, weather information services, telephones and other government information and communication systems for potential and actual emergency situations. Analyzes information and makes recommendations for appropriate follow-on actions.
• Maintains and operates the National Warning System (NAWAS) to ensure continuity of information flow for supporting FEMA Regions, Federal, State and local agencies.
• Maintains and reviews chronological logs of events used as an official record of decisions and activities. Reviews plan, directives, and policy guidance from higher headquarters, and suggests changes and improvements.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level you must possess one of the following:

GS-301-12: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience at the level of complexity and difficulty equivalent to GS-11 in the Federal Service in monitoring and responding to real-time information and assessments as a member of an Emergency Action Team in an emergency operations center.

5. Ability to communicate clearly and factually both verbally and in writing.
