Everyday our Immigration Services Officers provide technical and administrative advice to customers in the areas of immigration benefits, local, state laws, international treaties, and other legal references.

As an Immigration Services Officer, within the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Office of Customer Service and Public Engagement, Call Centers, support the adjudication process by providing external and internal customer support, managing correspondence, and providing overall support to the immigration process. You will:

  • Independently research, interpret and analyze an extensive spectrum of sources including pertinent sections of the law and regulations, operating instructions, references and guidance contained in legislative history to embrace the correct course of action.
  • Provide customer service to customers via telephone, e-mail, and fax in a professional manner while utilizing the most up to date technologies in communicating with them. Communicating and deciphering complex and highly technical immigration and nationality laws to customers both orally and in writing using plain language to help them navigate the USCIS systems.
  • Handle and analyze customer discrepancies, identify and route calls to appropriate resources and provide follow up with customers when necessary.
  • Resolve inquires involving immigration status requirements as they pertain to immigration law, DHS policy and organizational operational guidelines, and maintain relationships with those various groups.

GS-09: You qualify at the GS-09 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level that demonstrates the ability to Interview individuals applying for immigration benefits and examine and analyze documents received for authenticity. Research and analyze appropriate information. Interpret and apply immigration laws, policies and procedures. OR
  • You may substitute a Master's degree or 2 full years of graduate education leading to such a degree in any field or a J.D. or L.L.B. degree for experience required at the GS-9 grade level. Such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise two years of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 36 semester or 54 quarter hours.

AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENT: Subject to overtime, and shift work.

Training: New recruits will attend a minimum 5-week BASIC training program generally held in Dallas, Texas, with possible visits to other locations. This technical training must be successfully completed according to the standards of the agency. Failure to do so will be grounds for mandatory removal from the position. Such failure will result in either reassignment to a different position, demotion, or separation by appropriate procedures.

Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on the closing date of this announcement (Friday, March 22, 2013).
