The CAVHS is seeking a Nursing Assistant, GS-5, Unit 3K, Mental Health Service, North Little Rock campus.

Tour of Duty: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, rotating days

-Demonstrates the ability to identify nursing needs of each Veteran and takes an active role in the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team Planning.

-Monitors Veteran's progress; communicates and documents observations, making decisions accordingly in an effort to guide Veterans through progressive stages of their illness or recovery.

-Actively participates in teaching Veterans and their families rehabilitation and/or recovery techniques; recognizing and encouraging Veterans who meet or exceed their personal goals as well as working with the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team to set new goals.

Determines, from observation, any changes in Veteran's condition such as loss of sensory motore functions, dyspnea, cyanosis, anxiety, depression, and paranoia; reporting their observations the the assigned Team Leader, Assistant Team Leader, and/or Physician.

-Assembles the necessary equipment and/or supplies; assisting members of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team with performing diagnostic examinations, treatment procedures such as wound care and dressing changes, organizing patient care activities, and daily assignments for the purpose of providing quality, compassionate patient-centered care for the Veterans on an Acute Pyschiatric Unit.

-Collaboratively works with the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team; performing specialized care with Geri-Psych Veterans.

-Demonstrates skills in performing rehabilitative techniques and is active with teaching Geri-Psych Veterans and their famileis about recovery.

-Knowlegeable regarding the aging process, behavioral changes, and emotional reactions, adapting nursing care approaches to accommodate the needs of the Veterans and their family accordingly.

-Performs rehabilitative and recovery work with severely mentally ill and/or disabled Veterans, which involves collaborative work with the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team or other disciplines throught the healthcare organization.

-Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with Veterans, families, and other members of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team as well as responds appropriately to crisis or emergency situations.

-Performs daily work assignments without further direction from the Team Leader.

-Seeks guidance when unusual or unforseen problems arise, such as changes in a Veteran's physical condition or behavioral status; requiring modification of nursing actions or alteration of a Veteran's plan of care.

-Complies with environment of Care/Safety policies, procedures, and standards in an effort to prevent injury to self or others.

-Adheres to established policies and practices regarding "Patient Right and Privileges."

-Knowledgeable regarding the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), working to ensure Veterans, families, and clinicians are aware of confidentiality processes.

-Assists with orientation of new employees, nursing students, medical students, and residents in an effort to adapt to the Acute Psychiatric Unit as well as to perform daily assignments or duties effectively.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship. 
  • 1-year of specialized experience. 

Specialized experience is experience providing clinical care and treatment to patients with severe psychiatric problems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires moving and transporting of heavy items such as patients with limited mobility, gurneys, scales (bed and standing) and other equipment on a regular or recurring basis.  Regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, repositioning patients, and physical control or defense against emotionally ill patients.
