JOB SUMMARY:

Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

The incumbent serves as a Computer Assistant for the USDA-ARS Agricultural Systems Research Unit, Fort Collins, CO. The position provides assistance in improving the computer code and user interface in the Unit's agricultural system models to enhance their applications in field research and creating system based tools to guide improved management of resources. Under guidance of the supervisor and Unit IT specialists, the position also provides assistance with network security, hardware and software support of workstations, field measurement equipment, and local area network, including servers.

Work Schedule: This position is part time with intermittent full-time work throughout the year.

The incumbent will:

  • Restructure and debug science computer code for models and translate technical specifications into programming specifications in object-oriented format of the Object Modeling framework.
  • Select, evaluate, and enhance the application architecture and design of user interface.
  • Link, evaluate, and maintain new application software (e.g., parameter estimation, uncertainty) in the user interface.
  • Maintain and improve a source code control system and Hudson-based automated software application build system.
  • Assist in maintaining the Bacula distributed storage backup system.
  • Compare processing plans against experience to identify scheduling, input, data, tape, disk, or other sources of errors in processing.
  • Remedy and prevent errors.
  • Work with customers when testing or evaluating organizational products for their use, resolving common software issues encountered.

Minimum Qualifications

GS-07:

Specialized Experience: One full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties under close supervision: using scientific programming languages in model/interface development applications; testing, debugging, and maintaining software systems to include documenting code, testing, and installing and implementing software; using advanced methods, including MS Windows, Oracle Solaris, and Linux, to conduct system record searches identifying and resolving procedural errors; identifying indicators that operating conditions, equipment, or methods are causing problems in processing; and ensuring the application of information security, policies and practices in the development and delivery of new applications.

Education: Two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education with a major course of study in Computer Sciences or Civil/Environmental Engineering.

-OR-

Combination: A combination of education and experience as described above, such that they total 100% of the stated minimum qualifications for the GS-0335-07 position.

GS-08:

Specialized Experience: One full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties under supervision: using scientific programming languages in model/interface development applications; selecting and evaluating the application architecture and design of user interface, upgrading and improving computer code in the design, development, and upgrading of internally developed software; testing, debugging, and maintaining software systems to include documenting code, testing, and installing and implementing software; reviewing system reports, operating schedules, operator logs, selected system dumps, and other documents and sources to identify and resolve errors; identifying indicators that operating conditions, equipment, or methods are causing problems in processing; and ensuring the application of information security, policies and practices in the development and delivery of new applications.

Education: Two and one half years (54 semester hours) of graduate level education with a major course of study in Computer Sciences or Civil/Environmental Engineering.

Combination: A combination of education and experience as described above, such that they total 100% of the stated minimum qualifications for the GS-0335-08 position.
