DUTIES:

The incumbent provides problem identification quantification and solution, affecting Federal, State and local governments and private industrial activities.   Serves as a liaison with various activities for the development, compilation and distribution of informational and educational material.   Plans and conducts surveys of various industrial environments to appraise existing environmental hazards. 

Conducts inspections to determine compliance with occupational health and safety standards and regulations.  Investigates accidents, employee complaints concerning working conditions.  Prepares reports.  Issues citations and  proposes penalties for violations.  Provides technical assistance to employers.  Perform other duties as assigned.

Applicants must possess a degree in industrial hygiene; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

 OR

 Possess a combination of education and experience -- at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 

In addition, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.  

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include, planning, implementing, and conducting inspections of various industrial environments.

Documenting experience:  In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description.  Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record. In order to receive credit for experience in your resume that is not within the official series and grade level of your official position, you must provide a copy of the appropriate documentation of such experience as indicated above.
