POSITION DETAILS: One Permanent Full-time position to be filled

Salary range: $119,902.00- $235,000.00 ( Annually)

  • Title 38 salary range: $96,539 - $235,000 per annum

  • Establish priorities for commitment of Area resources to accomplish clinical policy and program goals and resources realignment to respond to changing health care delivery environment and communites disease burden.  The Portland Area Indian healthcare system comprises of service population of approximately 190,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives in Oregon, Washington and Oregon. The Area’s overall health care program includes urban programs under Title I of Public Law 93-968, Tribes with Title V compacts, and six Federal health care facilities.
  • Advise on management of Service resources (manpower, money, and materials) to Chief Executive Officers, Clinical Directors, Director of Nursing and local Quality Councils.
  • Seeks to be fully credentialed and privileged (within six monts of hired) to provide patient care on a regular schedule at Area's clinics.
  • Explain clinical program initiatives and services to Tribal leadership on a regular basis.
  • Oversee the work of an Epidemiologist and Diabetes Consultant.
  • Maintain regular contact with Headquarters, senior management, medical directors of other federal and state agencies, local health organizations, academic health science centers, and tribal governments for maximum benefit of the Area service programs; develops collaborative agreements with these agencies.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).]

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.

Licensure: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Specialized Training: Candidate must have completed a 5 years of residence training in a speciality (e.g., Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatric Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology) or have equivalent specialist experience and training.  The physician at this level assumes responsibility for diagnosis, prevention, therapy, maintenance and rehabilitation of patients in the capacity of senior specialist or expert.

Specialized Experience: Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their resume their leadership experience in a primary care setting.


The following factor has been determined to be essential for the position. Candidate must show possession of this factor in order to be minimally qualified.

  • 1. Knowledge of Indian Health Care Delivery System
  • 2. Board Certification in “primary care specialty.” Family Practice board certification is desired but primary care can also be Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology
