JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

This position is located with the Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNW), Anchorage Forestry Sciences Laboratory (AFSL) and has a duty station of Anchorage, Alaska. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of recurring and complex duties in support of the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program. FIA is part of a nationwide program which collects, processes, analyzes, evaluates, and publishes comprehensive information on forest and other related renewable resources. Inventory data are widely used by industrial leaders, forest managers, and government agencies in making policy decisions. The mission of the AFSL data collection team is to collect high quality data on all forest and non-forest plots in Alaska and to work with other FIA Teams to ensure the quality, completeness and usefulness of inventory data.

This position is located on Pacific Northwest Research Station in Archorage, AK with the Pacific Northwest Research Station.

Temporary Appointment: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. The incumbent will work in Alaska from May-August with the potential of additional work with other FIA units after the Alaska field season typically in WA, OR, or CA.

Positions may be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

Works with a team of technicians and professionals, collecting forestry and forest health monitoring data on permanently established fixed radius plots. Assists in locating field sites using aerial photographs and topographic maps. Collects forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements according to nationally standardized protocol and field procedures. The incumbent obtains data on: tree growth and mortality; forest type, stand size and stand age; anthropogenic treatments and/or natural disturbances; insects and disease; soil attributes; and understory vegetation composition. Assists in field manual interpretation when assessing complex or unusual situations. Uses botanical keys to identify plants encountered and assists in the collection and preservation of specimens. Records all measurements utilizing a personal data recorder. Uploads and edits data on a daily basis. Completes accurate and concise plot summaries of all field visits. Actively participates in the safety program, assisting in identifying hazards and mitigating actions. Travels by boat, small aircraft, and helicopter as necessary to access field sites. Lives and works on a marine vessel for extended periods of time with limited personal space and continuous background noise from engines and generators. This position has the duty of carrying a firearm, which is a safety precaution for field-going personnel due to the high number of brown bears in Alaska. Incumbent shall attend shotgun training annually and any recertification necessary to maintain this skill. Field work often requires moderate to strenuous physical exertion, including walking, bending, and climbing, in rugged terrain under adverse conditions for long periods of time.Work in the forest environment involves considerable risk of falls due to uneven terrain, risk of insect bites, contact with poisonous plants, etc. Work is conducted during conditions such as rain, snow, wind, dust, extreme heat and extreme cold. Hardhat, boots, gloves, and possibly other safety equipment are required.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalant to the GS-4. Specialized experience is defined as one of more of the following: Collects forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements; Obtains data on: tree growth and mortality; forest type, stand size and stand age; anthropogenic treatments and/or natural disturbances; insects and disease; soil attributes; Records all measurements utilizing a personal data recorder; Uploads and edits field data on a daily basis.- OR

Successfully completed of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. - OR

A combination of education and experience listed above

DRUG TESTING: This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. This position requires that the incumbent meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996.
