VA North Texas Health Care System is the second busiest VA system in the nation and we are growing! Comprised of the Dallas VA Medical Center, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic and Tyler VA Primary Care Clinic, VANTHCS is an integrated health care system with approximately 4,600 employees and over 1,600 volunteers and clinical trainees. VANTHCS also coordinates a Community Based Outpatient Clinic program throughout its 40-county primary service area to improve access to care for veterans throughout 38 North Texas and 2 in southern Oklahoma. This position is located in the Pharmacy Service (Outpatient).

The Pharmacy Technician is a general assistant to the Pharmacist. The incumbent has an overall understanding of the mission and activities of the Pharmacy Service and its responsibility to the overall mission of the Medical Center, ensuring quality control of all medications and/or medical supplies dispensed to patients throughout the Outpatient Pharmacy. The Pharmacist is available for consultation and guidance as needed when requested.  Technicians processes outpatient prescriptions by performing the following tasks; Separates computer generated labels/printouts apart by patient, using care to prevent mix up of confusion between different patient labels. Can generate reprinted label via computer if necessary. Selects correct prepack or selects and counts correct medication, recording lot#, expiration date, fill date and initials on computer fill document. When using prepack, this may be accomplished by transferring the prepack label to the computer fill document.  Labels filled medication container with correct prescription and auxiliary labels, assembling containers and fill documents in tote for final check by Pharmacist. Takes special care to prevent mix up or confusion between different patient's medications. Leaves mail or pickup label so Pharmacist can place in correct area after checking. Daily cleans counting equipment and work area, reporting malfunctioning equipment to supervisor. Participates in QA activities of the Outpatient Pharmacy area primarily in error detection/prevention and patient waiting/satisfaction surveys.

  

WORK SCHEDULES: 10:00a.m. - 6:30p.m., and rotating weekends and holidays.

    a.  Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

    b.  Education or Experience.  A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

    c.  Certification.  Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

    d.  English Language Proficiency.  Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.  Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.”]

GS-6:  EXPERIENCE:  One year of experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSA's at the next lower level.  In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSA's and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSA's designated by an asterisk(*).

 

Certification:  PTCB Certification is required at this grade level and above.

 

Your application will be evaluated based on your ability to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities/competencies.

1.  Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

2.  Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

3.  Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

4.  Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

5.  Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

6.  Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Assignments.  Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists.  For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time
