JOB SUMMARY:

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) develops and produces United States currency notes, trusted worldwide.  As a primary function, the BEP prints billions of dollars each year for delivery to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.  The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System operates as the nation's central bank and serves to ensure that adequate amounts of currency and coin are in circulation.  With production facilities in Washington, D.C. and Fort Worth, Texas, the BEP is the largest producer of federal government security documents in the United States.

This position is being filled as a TERM appointment and will not exceed 4 years.

This position is located in the Office of Security Printing, Eastern Currency Facility. The incumbent serves as a member of a team of Currency Processing Assistants. Receives, processes, stores, and destroys U.S. currency. Maintains and processes large volumes of currency in a highly controlled, regulated, and secure team environment using high speed processing equipment.  Works effectively under the workflow direction of a Currency Processing Supervisor.  Incumbent is responsible for feeding bank notes into the machine and packing the finished bundles into appropriate packaging.

The following are the duties of this position:

  • Prepares and processes currency on a computerized state-of-the-art high- speed banknote processing machines, i.e. BPS 2000 OBIS.
  • Monitors machine performance and takes corrective actions when machines malfunction.
  • Rejects and shreds defective notes, incorrect denominations, and non-machine-readable notes. 
  • Counts and sorts banknotes.
  • Places fit currency produced by the machine in secure wrappings, secures large bundles of currency.
  • Operates machinery and processes currency in compliance with all applicable Treasury-BEP, Board of Governors, Federal Reserve System regulatory policies and procedures.

To qualify for this Currency Processing Assistant position at the GS-7 level, applicants must meet one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in the Federal service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the following duties: Adhering to procedures in the use of automated systems; Using high speed computerized processing machinery; Operating machine in single/multi-faceted multiple machine room environment; Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers when counting and sorting products; Processing data accurately; Placing and securing large bundles and pushing large heavy containers; Feeding products into the machine and packing the finished bundles; Receiving, processing, storing, and destroying products in accordance to established policies and procedures; and Notifying management of any production issues or deviations in person and in writing.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS /WORKING CONDITIONS: The work requires constant physical exertion for long periods of time such as standing, walking, stooping, bending, heavy lifting up to 50 Ibs., approximately 75% of the time.  The work environment varies from industrial and production settings with moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as high levels of noise, chemicals, dusty areas, and fast paced environment.  Occasional overtime is required.  Subject to constant surveillance, monitoring, and recording by video equipment.
