The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center is a 673-bed tertiary healthcare facility which provides care to over 100,000 veterans in northern Ohio.  We provide care through our main medical facility at the Wade Park campus, 13 community based outpatient clinics, and 3 vet centers. The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for a Medical Support Assistant. The Medical Support Assistant will function in Community Outpatient Service at the Youngstown Community Outpatient Clinic (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday). The Medical Support Assistant duties include:

  • Communicating/working effectively with a diverse population of patients, staff and external providers to acquire, clarify or give facts to exchange general and medical information directly related to the work.
  • Scheduling appointment dates to return to be followed by CBOC Staff, coordinates appointments for timeliness to avoid conflicts in patient treatment.
  • Working as a team member with staff in preventing and resolving delays and misunderstandings, intervenes on the patients' behalf to resolve problems and complaints regarding entitlement or services.
  • Ensuring that all work assignments are in compliance with patient care rules and regulations.
  • Scanning or photocopying all insurance cards for accurate data for billing purposes.
  • Receiving patients and visitors in person or telephonically; recording, relaying messages and redirecting calls.
  • Utilizing software to pre-register patients and to perform means and co-pay tests.
  • Referring all questions requiring medical attention for triage determination and recognizing symptoms and making immediate referral to appropriate medical staff.

Basic Requirements:

Experience: Six months of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform Medical Support Assistant (MSA) work;

 

OR 

Education: One year above high school.

 

OR 

Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education.   An example would be one year of clerical or office experience and six months of education above high school. (Transcripts are required if using education to qualify for the position.)

 

Grade Determinations:

 

GS-3 MSA (Entry Level) Experience or Education. None beyond the basic requirements.

 

GS-4 MSA (Developmental Level) Experience or Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-3 level in federal service;

 

OR

One year of experience in clerical or office work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position;

 

OR

Two years of education above high school. 

 

GS-5 MSA (Full Performance Level)

One year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in federal service;

 

OR

Four years of education above high school.

 

Specialized Experience:

Knowledge of Current MSA (Medical Support Assistant) practices:   Experience in either paid or non-paid employment demonstrating the knowledge, skills and abilities associated with current MSA responsibilities. This experience could include work in hospital or doctor office admissions communicating face to face explaining benefits and providing instruction on next steps.

 

Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a MSA is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time work week. For example, a MSA employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time work week of credit for each 2 weeks of service.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

  • Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
  • Ability to identify customer’s concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
