The incumbent  service include but are not limited to interventions to increase access to care, including transportation assistance and advance directive, economic assistance, including assistance with medical bills financial aid services and strategies to increase income (employment, vocational rehabilitation, VA benefits, disability.  The incumbent must complete thorough psychosocial assessments using recommended assessment tools to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and.or their families.  The incumbent must be able utilize this assessment in facilitating the Veteran's maximum use of treatment for attainment of the highest level of independence that is possible and practicable.  Must possess a working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures, including acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses, substance abuse disorders, common medication and their effects and medical terminology.  The incumbent  must provide consultation and education to Veterans and their families regarding community resources including information and referral for additional services from other VA programs, other government programs, and community programs.  The incumbent must possess skills and knowledge to provide case management services to Veterans and their families throughout the continuum of care.  Case management includes complex medical, mental health or psychosocial factors that are beyond what the core team can provide.  the incumbent will be able to appropriately utilize principles of human growth and development over the life span and will be able to assist Veterans in coping with the loss and grief experiences from disability and terminal illness.  The incumbent will serve on committees, work groups, and task forces at the facility as deemed appropriate by the direct supervisor, Chief of Social Work Service, and Primary Care Service Management.   At the GS-9 level, you will perform similar duties but under closer supervision.)

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency (written and spoken)
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • License, Registration, Certification Requirements (as applicable) (See Below Exception)
  • Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • The GS-9 entry level grade for the GS-185 Social Work series is used for Social Workers with less than one year of post-MSW experience and who are not yet licensed or certified at the independent practice level. (See Below Exception)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: See VHA Handbook 5019 "Physical Requirements"

 

Exception. VHA may waive the licensure or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified, pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examinations. This exception only applies up to the full performance level. For grade levels above the full performance level, the candidate must be licensed or certified.

 

For grades below or at the full performance level, VHA social workers who are not licensed or certified at the time of appointment must become licensed or certified at the independent, master's level within 3 years of their appointment as a social worker. Most states require 2 years of post-MSW experience as a pre-requisite to taking the licensure/certification exam, and VHA gives social workers one additional year to pass the licensure/certification exam. In California, where the prerequisites for licensure exceed two years, social workers must become licensed at the independent, master's level within one year of meeting the full California prerequisites for licensure.

 

It is VHA policy that a VHA social worker who does not yet have a license that allows independent practice must be supervised by a licensed independent practitioner of the same discipline who is a VA staff member and who has access to the electronic health record.
