JOB SUMMARY:

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service promotes the financial integrity and operational efficiency of the U.S. government through exceptional accounting, borrowing, collections, payments, and shared services.  The Student Trainee (Clerical) will be responsible for the correct recording, depositing, and reconciling of incoming checks and cash and will use a personal computer to access various software and mainframe applications to record receipt of other securities.

    The major duties of this position include:
    * Analyzing incoming correspondence with checks to determine the type of check and the correct account in which to deposit the check.
    * Searching a tracking system for customers sending checks and creating requests for each customer.
    * Scanning incoming checks and encoding key information for the checks into a paper check conversion application.
    * Interpreting information from electronic searches and manual search requests to determine appropriate film records and digital images to search.
    * Searching a wide variety of microfilm records and digital images related to savings bonds and marketable securities issued by the federal government since 1935.
    * Examining incoming documents for legibility, validity, and conformance to established procedures.
    * Ensuring proper grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are used when entering specific data from source documents or when creating original correspondence to be returned with checks.

    You must meet the following requirements: You must have one year of progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of this position as listed above. OR
    Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree. OR
    You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

     

    You MUST meet the definition of a STUDENT for the duration of your appointment. The definition of a student is: an individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93–842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic/vocational or technical course-load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this Program.

    An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.
