This position is established on a Forest unit to serve primarily as an operator of a variety of heavy equipment for road maintenance, watershed restoration, facilities maintenance, fuels reduction and the support of natural resource projects.

Temporary Appointment: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).

Positions may be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

The primary purpose of this poition is the operation of a variety of heavy equipment for road maintenacne, watershed restoration, facilities maintenance, fuels reduction and the support of other natural resource projects. The work is generally performes in steep, hilly, rocky and other types of adverse terrain. Operates engineering and contruction equipment such as graders,excavators, tractors with bulldozers or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, masticators, brush rakes, trench diggers and large industrial tractors on all types of terrain, close to buildings,trees, drop-offs, rocks or other obstructions and obstacles. Excavates, backfills,grades or levels earth to rough specifications on all types of terrain. Moves earth on mountains and steep slopes, graded curves ad shoulders, rocky or soft ground, hilly forest and other similar rough features to grade the earth to the general contour desided on trails, roads, canals, tunnels or contruction sites. The position performs rough grading as well as fine surfacing on flat or rolling terrain. Adjusts equipment attachments for proper positioning and working order, making adjustments without stopping the power unit or the equipment. Transports heavy equipment to job site. Incumbent is required to have a good degree of mechanical ability and skill to perform preventative maintenance and minor repair of equipment. Completes all agency required administrative duties.

This position requires the selectee to obtain or possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and therefore, is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. Applicant tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use unless they currently occupy a TDP under the DOT/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. Final appointment is conditional on a negative drug test. This announcement constitutes 30 days advance notice.

DRUG TESTING: This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter.
