JOB SUMMARY:

NINDS conducts, fosters, coordinates, and guides basic and clinical research on the normal and diseased nervous system to determine the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders and stroke, and to seek better understanding of neurological disorders.  For more information, visit http://www.ninds.nih.gov.  This position is located in the Neuroimmunological Diseases Unit (NDU), Neuroimmunology Branch, which performs clinical research in neuroimmunological diseases, with special emphasis on multiple sclerosis (MS).

  • Assesses patients participating in clinical trials for actual and/or potential health problems related to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Gathers appropriate data, physical assessments and interview information to review and input into database including follow-up calls to home physician or family.
  • Serves as liaison for Institute and Clinical Center staff for protocol implementation and evaluation.
  • Assists in the design of protocols, provides and elicits input concerning the impact on available resources and discusses findings/recommendations with appropriate study chairperson.
  • Designs and present in-services to nurses and fellows as the inception of new clinical trials; gives informal clinical trial updates to clinical areas.

Basic Requirements:

Education:  Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

 

Registration:  Applicants must have an active, current registration as a professional nurse in the State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.  An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment.  No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained. 

 

To Qualify at the GS-12 grade level you must meet the basic requirements and have one year of Clinical Research Nurse experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following tasks:  coordinating and facilitating the execution of clinical research and clinical trials in the area of neurology within a designated patient population; assist in the design of research protocols; providing and eliciting input concerning the impact on available resources and discusses findings/recommendations; recruiting and screening new patients and assessing their eligibility for clinical trials; collecting research data or samples and managing specific clinical protocols within a research program; providing patient and family counseling, health education, and serving as a patient advocate along with other health care professionals; serving in a formal or informal nursing leadership position; advising staff; and role modeling professional practices, collaborations and effective communications with patients, families and affected communities.
