There is an Assistant Nurse Manager Position open in Dallas for the Home Based Primary Care Unit (HBPC).  The work schedule (M-F days 8 hour shifts) will require flexibility with the availability to work any shift or extra duty as the need arises (this is a non- compressed tour position). The position will be a Supervisory position under the immediate supervision of the Nurse Manager with the second line supervisor being the Associate Chief Nurse.  The role is designed to mentor potential Nurse Managers.  The incumbent will serve as the primary charge nurse when scheduled to rotate to off-tours.  Incumbent will assist with the day to day operations of the unit, work collaboratively with the nurse manager in clinical and administrative duties (i.e. Performance / Process Improvement activities, special programs, policies and procedures, time schedules) and assist with employees staff education (i.e. orientation, annual review, competencies etc.).

The following is a list of skills and characteristics that will be required and/or expected if assigned to this role:

a. A baccalaureate degree with a major in Nursing from an Accredited National League of Nursing is strongly preferred.

b. Two (2) years of nursing experience required in Home Community Services.

c. Experience in functioning as charge nurse or leadership role required.

d. Demonstrated ability to communicate well with staff of all levels.

e. Excellent attendance and flexibility in scheduling is necessary.

f. Assist with coordination of training and education for all nursing staff positions.

g. Experience strongly preferred in acute medical/surgical, emergency and geriatrics within the last 5 years.

h. Experience of 2-3 years in Home Health and Community Services within the last 5 years. Also 2-3 years of nursing management experience.

i. Knowledge of facility policies/procedures and ability to teach and enforce. Selectee will be expected to serve on multiple committees,

task forces, etc. as required.

j. Collaborate with the employee and Nurse Manager in the evaluation process of employees.

k. Prepare time schedules and submit to Nurse Manager for review and approval.

l. ANCC Certification within 6-12 months in a nursing specialty (Geriatrics, Medical/Surgical, etc.).

m. Collect data for quarterly reports on process improvement activity and program evaluations (i.e. wound care, infection control, patient

complaints, medication errors, equipment location, etc.).

n. Ensure that medical records are maintained, current and complete by monitoring the Nursing Service documentation to verify the entries are

descriptive of care rendered and all physician orders have been properly carried out.

o. Plan, coordinate, and utilize available staff to accomplish patient care workload.

p. Demonstrates, promotes, creates and ensures a culturally diverse workforce in which the values and needs of all individuals are respected.

q. Other duties as assigned.


Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.    Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.   Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.  

Education/Experience Requirements: 


  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. 
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
