To qualify for this position at the GS-7 level you must meet one of the following requirements:
- One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level with responsibilities related to the work of a Histopathology Technician. Specialized experience for this position is anatomical pathology technician work in (a) cutting and staining very thin sections of human tissue specimens for microscopic examinations and/or (b) testing and examining body fluids, etc for abnormalities in cell structure. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your Resume' and/or OF-612 and must include job title, duties, month & year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~
- One year full year of graduate level education with course work that is directly related to the work of a Histopathology Technician. Such graduate courses may have included clinical pathology, clinical chemistry, hematology, diagnostic microbiology, etc. Your overall education must indicate the ability to perform the work of this position. You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
- Knowledge of professional histology principles and practices performed in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge and ability to properly use laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations.
- Ability to identify tissue types and elements microscopically.
- Ability to work efficiently and independently within established guidelines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work of this position requires regular and recurrent standing to operate various pieces of equipment, walking between different sections of the laboratory, and reaching and bending to obtain supplies and specimens and to operate instruments. Occasionally lifts heavy containers of reagents. Manual dexterity is necessary to perform intricate procedures and to repair and operate equipment.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:
- Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
- Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
- Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
- Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group. Qualifying veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the best qualified group.
