Serve as the Center Director of the National Center for Radiation Field Operations (NCRFO) Center for Planning and Training.  The Center Director has a combination of broad technical knowledge of the critical issues within each program combined with management skills for planning, developing and implementing technical program policies and objectives.  Supervises a multi-disciplinary staff of scientists who manage and operate major national programs. Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities.  Advises employees regarding policies, procedures and directives of management.  Serves as the senior technical advisor to the NCRFO Director on strategic planning and training programs in support of radiological monitoring and incident response.  Coordinates the Center’s activities and provides advice and assistance to NCRFO, ORIA, EPA Regional Offices, other Federal agencies, state and local governments and tribal nations.  Serves on the Radiological Emergency Response Team (RERT) and participates in radiological emergencies and exercises nationwide.  Maintains technical skill and proficiency in the use of radiological equipment and instrumentation.

 

You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described
below to qualify for this position.

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-14 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience defined as experience managing scientific projects; analyzing environmental policy and/or radiation protection programs and applying principles, theories, concepts and techniques of radiation or environmental protection. 

Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:  knowledge of highly technical and complex environmental/scientific work; ability to plan, develop and implement technical program policies and objectives; ability to supervise and lead a group toward accomplishing goals; knowledge of key radiological programs, training and response operations; knowledge of complex strategic planning processes and ability to develop training and training exercise programs.


 

A bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following:  Physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science.

This position is designated as High Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

Upon acceptance of an initial appointment to a supervisory or managerial position with the EPA, you agree to complete all elements of the EPA Successful Leaders Program.  This development program is designed to enhance leadership skills and abilities and meet the Agency's goal of providing new leaders with the skills and tools you need to be successful.  

Medical Requirement: You must be found to be physically fit by an authorized government physician.
