As the Tele-Mental Health Medical Support Assistant for the Mental Health Service Line you will be assigned at the McAllen Out Patient Clinic within the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System and will be primarily responsible for providing administrative support to the professional Mental Health Staff within an outpatient setting, utilizing working knowledge of health care system programs and services. The Tele-Mental Health Medical Support Assistant, (TMH-MSA) will provide orientation to the professional staff on administrative procedures and logistical factors associated with health care delivery. As the TMH-MSA, you will be the focal point for both veterans and the clinical staff, and will provide assistance and act upon administrative matters in the Veteran's best interest, and will provide guidance and support to Mental Health staff concerning the Department of Veterans Affair's regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to Mental Health and general health care administration guidelines.  The TMH-Medical Support Assistant will necessary test/procedure preparation to veterans and records information, such as date, type of exam, and procedure required, on appointment cards, and ensure that follow-up appointments/procedures are coordinated and scheduled. Is responsible for diverse output of computer data, such as: appointment lists before start of clinic, letters for appointments, print-out No- Show list at end of each clinic, send out appointment reminder letters, and transcribing staff orders which cannot be addressed at time of appointment.

Note: This is a bargaining Unit position.

Note: Tour of Duty is Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Experience-

  • 1) Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or

  • 2) Education. One year above high school; or

  • 3) Experience/Education Combination Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

  • English Language Proficiency

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

GS-3 MSA (Entry Level)

Experience or Education None beyond the basic requirements.

 

GS-4 MSA (Developmental Level)

Experience or Education One year of experience in clerical or office work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.

OR

Two years of education above high school.

 

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:

1. Ability to meet, communicate and interact with individuals from varying backgrounds and other health care team members in a courteous and helpful manner in order to complete job assignments.

2. Ability to use various types of office automation equipment and software.

3. Ability to set up, organize, and maintain record systems.

 

GS-5 MSA (Full Performance Level)

Experience or Education One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

OR

4 years of education above high school.

 

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:

1. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports.

2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

3. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting.

4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work.

5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

6. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

Physical Requirements. The work is mostly sedentary; however, walking, stair climbing, bending, stooping, and carrying light weight documents, folders and manuals are required.
