JOB SUMMARY:

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) is the nation’s fully accredited federal school of medicine and graduate school of nursing. Its education, research and consultation programs are unique, related directly to military medicine, tropical diseases, disaster medicine, military medical readiness and adaptation to extreme environments. This position is located in the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), Veterinary Sciences Department. The mission of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) is to conduct research in the field of radiobiology and related matters essential to the operational and medical support of the Department of Defense and military services.  The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) also provides services and performs cooperative research with other federal and civilian agencies and institutions. You may be required to perform duties in connection with the care, management, and nutrition of the laboratory animals used in research programs of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) and assists in the sub technical operation of the animal facility under close supervision and direction of an Animal Caretaker Leader.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation.

As an Animal Caretaker you will be responsible for a variety of duties with these being the Major Duties:

  • Display knowledge in the care and maintenance of one or more species of ferrets, rats, mice, pigs, goats and others.  Sweep and mop floors and clean and sanitize cages.
  • Display the ability to recognize obvious and subtle changes and recognize signs of illness, disease, discontent, and general physical condition.
  • Display knowledge and experience in consistently providing standard amounts of substances, (i.e. portion or a continuous supply of food to animals). 
  • Maintain the inventory of animals on a periodic regular schedule and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Assemble and disassemble cages and associated equipment.
  • Display animal handling and restraint procedures for hard to control animals.  Display the ability to receive and process new animals.
