Petrified Forest National Park is located in northeastern Arizona, bisected by U.S. Interstate 40, approximately 26 miles east of Holbrook, Arizona. The park has a concession operation that includes curio shop, restaurant and gas station. Beyond this, other services are not available in the park; some shopping opportunities in Holbrook; greater shopping opportunities in Flagstaff, AZ (110 miles west), Show Low (70 miles southwest), Winslow (50 miles west) or Gallup, NM (70 miles east). Major shopping centers exist in the metropolitan Phoenix, AZ (225 miles) and Albuquerque, NM (210) miles) areas. Year-around recreational opportunities abound within a short commuting distance. The park is situated on a high plateau with an elevation averaging 5,600 feet, with a semi-arid climate. Temperatures range from 0 in winter to 100 in the summer. Precipitation averages 9 inches per year. A junior college (Northland Pioneer College) campus in Holbrook offers classes and workshops for adult education/enrichment with both day and night classes.  Park housing may be available

The incumbent will have a leadership role in management of the facilities at Petrified Forest National Park.  This includes supervising seven permanent and several term or seasonal employees in maintaining the buildings, roads, trails, utilities, and grounds of the park, gathering and maintaining data pertaining to those facilities, and planning work and project requests under the direction of the Facility Manager.  Supervisory duties include recruiting, hiring, training, coaching, evaluating, disciplining, and rewarding employees as necessary.  The incumbent will be an agent in communicating safety messages and ensuring that activities undertaken follow the principles of Operational Leadership.  The incumbent will routinely interact with leaders in other park operations to collaborate, communicate, and plan.

Qualifications To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.

 

GS-1640-11 Supervisory Facility Operations Specialist

 

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree  or  LL.M., if related

 

Specialized experience: Specialized experience is experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying experience include, but are not limited to, the following: 

 

* Managing a maintenance program for office or apartment building complexes, hospitals, recreation facilities, military, or other special-purpose installations, including planning maintenance activities, and developing preventive maintenance programs.

 

* Conducting surveillance activities over construction and maintenance operations performed by a variety of private contractors, including reviewing project plans and specifications for workability, informing contractors of construction and reporting requirements, and supervising operations for conformance with project plans.

 

* Performing maintenance or construction work, including estimating material and labor costs for a variety of construction or maintenance projects (such as construction or maintenance of brick, frame, structural steel, reinforced concrete, and other type structures ranging from one- or two-story buildings to larger structures), directing actual work operations, and maintaining appropriate contacts with the organization funding the project.

OR

Graduate Education: Major study -- engineering, industrial arts, property management, or business administration. 


Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified in the table, and may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-9 and GS-11. (When crediting education that requires specific course work, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used.)

Requirements

       ·         You may be required to serve a managerial/supervisory probationary period of 1 year

·         National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform
