As a Nurse Practitioner (Wound/Ostomy) you will consult and follow inpatients and out-patients with complex wounds, fistulas, and ostomies. The incumbent will provide clinical leadership in assessing, implementing and evaluating the care of patients and their families related to prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, other skin integrity issues, and ostomy care to include facilitating appointments, triaging phone calls, ordering appropriate therapy, prescribing medications and medical devices and  performing patient education including pre-op and post-op ostomy counseling. The incumbent submits appropriate consults driven by patient need, provides education and mentorship as a clinical resource to nursing staff to enhance their skills for evidence based practice related to skin care and appropriate product utilization and coordinates patient care with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. In addition, the Nurse Practitioner chairs/participates in committees maintains and submits data regarding hospital acquired pressure ulcers and evaluates current facility practices in regards to pressure ulcers and initiates evidence based interventions and programs. Provides education on patient skin assessment,  prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers to nursing personnel in  ALMD and KD. The incumbent reviews/updates nursing/hospital policy concerning Wound and Ostomy Care. The Wound/Ostomy Nurse Practitioner will also assist in new employee orientation and precept students. Participates in the revision of nursing and hospital policy concerning the prevention of pressure ulcers and skin assessments.

Hours of Work: 7:30am-4:00pm

Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

Citizen of the United States.  Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accredit bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.    Must be proficient in spoken and written English. 

 

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.   Experience as a NP will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research. Education/Experience Requirements: 

Nurse Practitioners: A nurse practitioner must be a licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, posses a masters's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.  The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.
