JOB SUMMARY:

This is a temporary Pathways Internship Program appointment not-to-exceed 1 (one) year.  This position is located in The Office of the Secretary. Applicants must be available to work a regular schedule when classes are in session as well as during scheduled breaks.

The Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent job in the civil service.

This position is located in the Office of the Secretary, the top organization in the Executive branch responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and coordination of all agricultural programs administered by the Federal government.  The impacts of these programs are national and international as well as economic and social in the broadest scope.

The work may involve trainee duties in one or more areas, but are not limited to:

  •  Uses office automation equipment and software to type and edit a variety of standard documents in accordance with established routine procedures.
  • Types final, error-free documents ensuring correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and grammar.
  • Researches websites for information
  • Maintains office files, directives, and references in appropriate alphabetical, numerical, chronological, or subject matter order.
  • Receives and routes incoming mail to office staff.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing to employees within the office and to outside entities.

To qualify, you MUST meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

GS-03 Level: Six months of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a Visitor Use Assistant. My general experience includes greeting the public, disseminating information, and providing directions.
OR
GS-03 Level: One year of education above high school (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours). This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating number of credit hours in order to qualify based on education).
OR
GS-03 Level: Combination.I have NOT completed 6 months of general experience as described above or the 1 year of education as indicated above, but I have an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, 3 months of the general experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 6 months of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) as specified above, equals 100% of the total requirement. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating number of credit hours in order to qualify based on the combination option).
GS-04: One year of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a Visitor Use Assistant. My general experience includes greeting the public, disseminating information, and providing directions.
OR
GS-04 Level: Two years of education above high school (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours). This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating number of credit hours in order to qualify based on education).
OR
GS-04 Level: Combination. I have NOT completed 1 full year of general experience as described above or the 2 years of education as indicated above, but I have an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, 6 months of the general experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 1 year of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) as specified above, equals 100% of the total requirement. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating number of credit hours in order to qualify based on the combination option).
OR
GS-05 Level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Visitor Use Assistant. Specialized experience includes providing information or assistance to the public in a business or recreation setting; instructing groups of people or individuals; and compiling and analyzing information to report. My experience also included handling, tracking, or depositing monies; using software programs to maintain fee and stock data; resolving issues that arise in the remittance process and assisting staff with fee issues; and using tools or equipment (e.g., cash registers, calculators, etc.) to make sales transactions.
OR
GS-05 Level: Four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating degree earned and credit hours in order to qualify based on education).
OR
GS-05 Level: Combination. I have NOT completed 1 full year of specialized experience as described above or the 4 years of education as indicated above, but I have an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (75% of the qualifying education) as specified above, equals greater than 100% of the total requirement. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating number of credit hours in order to qualify based on the combination option). 


Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.) Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. USA Pathways candidate will meet the qualification requirements consistent with OPM qualifications standards applicable the position by the closing date of the announcement.

To qualify you must:

  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • All Applicants must be in good academic standing 
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, including technical and vocational institutions on at least a half-time basis pursuing a degree or certification.
  • Proof of student status must be submitted with the application. Applications will not be considered without this documentation.  
  • DD214 (Member 4 copy) or other veterans' documents required to receive veterans' preference.
  • Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • If selected, official transcripts will be required prior to entrance on duty.
  • A Pathways Participant Agreement will be required if you are selected for a position. The agreement must be signed by all applicable parties prior to entrance on duty.
  • A qualified typist is required (40+ words per minute).
  • As a condition of employment, a background investigation may be required for this position.
  • Schedule will be determined when student is selected.but will consist of regular, daytime hours.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

  • Category rating procedures will be used to rank and select eligible candidates. The following quality categories will be used: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. Within each quality category, veterans' preference eligibles will receive selection priority over non-veterans.
  • Your final category placement will be based on your responses to the assessment questionnaire.
  • If, after reviewing your resume and / or supporting documentation, a determination is made that you have inflated your qualifications and or experience, your score can / will be adjusted to more accurately reflect your abilities. Please follow all instructions carefully. Errors or omissions may affect your rating. Deliberate attempts to falsify information may be grounds for not selecting you.
