JOB SUMMARY:

Reclamation is a contemporary water management agency. Join Reclamation during the Recreation Season. Reclamation is seeking entry level rangers to serve as a contact for a diverse group of visitors in a heavy summer recreation use area. This position is located with the Bureau of Reclamation, Central California Area Office, Recreation Resources Division, New Melones Recreation Resources Branch in Sonora, CA. KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • U.S. Citizenship Required. Required to wear Park Ranger uniform.
  • Suitability for employment determined by a background investigation.
  • Subject to working nights, weekends, holidays and irregular hours.
  • A pre-employment physical and valid state driver's license is required.
  • Ability to be certified in basic first aid, CPR, AED and First Responder.
  • Ability to be certified in basic water rescue.

The incumbent will: Serve as a contact for a diverse group of visitors in a heavy summer recreation use area. Greet and advise visitors of recreation rules and regulations. Conduct regular, frequent patrols of recreation areas by vehicle, boat, bicycle or on foot. Prepare reports. Staff and maintain the Visitor Center and entrance stations. Administer first aid and other emergency assistance, coordinating with cooperating emergency service providers and agencies. Research, develop and present a variety of interpretive presentations. Assist higher graded Rangers in development of new interpretive documents and materials. Assist higher graded Park Rangers and other staff with special projects, including development of environmental education programs, recreation plans and recreation site designs. Assist with natural resource management issues and protection, such as trail building or restoration projects, assistance with concessions issues or projects, and monitoring special status species.

GS-04: 6 months of specialized experience and 6 months of general experience as defined below: OR 2 years of education above high school which included 12 semester hours or more of related course work. Related course work is course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth science, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. General experience is defined as experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression method; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical or trades and crafts work is also qualifying if pertinent to the position to be filled. Experience of a routine nature, such as typing, filing, maintaining records or other non-specialized tasks is not qualifying. Specialized Experience is defined as experience that demonstrated the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, or other park-related work. Experience that only includes law enforcement activities will not be considered qualifying as specialized experience. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to the following: Park guide or tour leader work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and /or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. These examples are not all inclusive.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Human Resources will review resumes and transcripts to ensure applicants meet the basic qualification requirements. We will evaluate each applicant who meets the basic qualifications on the information provided in the assessment questionnaire. The assessment questionnaire will take approximately 60 minutes. Applicants determined best-qualified will be referred to the selecting official. Category Rating and Selection procedures are being used for this position. Ability to work both independently and as a team member, coordinating work efforts with others in an effort to achieve resource management and visitor services objectives. 4. Ability to handle groups and deal with a variety of situations including emergency situations, coordinating with appropriate law enforcement and medical response teams. RELOCATION: Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses are not authorized for payment by the Bureau of Reclamation. Any cost incurred in reporting for duty will be the responsibility of the selectee. 

Reclamation has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

Pre-Employment Physical: Selected applicant for this position is required to obtain a successful reimbursable pre employment physical examination by a licensed physician certifying to his/her ability to perform the duties of the position.

Operation of a government vehicle is required; therefore, you must possess and maintain a valid State’s driver’s license.  Driving record will be verified prior to final selection. Selectee will be required to submit a copy of his/her driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Available to work more than 8 hours per day, shift work, on-call, weekends and holidays.

Physical Effort: The incumbent may be required to work under extreme physical stress for long periods of time such as during emergency operations. The work may require hiking in rough steep terrain, carrying heavy objects for short distances and operating vehicles and boats in rough conditions. Work can require long periods of sitting, standing and walking. Working Conditions: Field work is required, exposing the employee to the outdoor environment to include both land and water. The work requires the operation of vehicles and boats, arduous walking in steep, uneven terrain, exposure to biting insects (including ticks), venomous snakes, skin irritating plants, dust and extreme heat.
