Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunity Residency (VALOR)

VALOR is an elite, paid program for senior nursing students with outstanding academic and clinical achievements.   The VALOR experience will include clinical practice with a qualified RN preceptor and participation in nursing-focused clinical conferences.  The Nursing VALOR Program provides the student with an opportunity to enhance their clinical skills and knowledge base, and learn VA policies and procedures.

The nursing VALOR Student under the guidance of proficient VA registered nurse preceptors develop clinical competencies in a medical-surgical and rehabilitation nursing.   The learning opportunities in these specialty areas will be enhanced by structured clinical experiences including competency-based clinical practice and participation in nursing-focused clinical conferences.

Students will be paid at a salary rate equal to 80 percent of the local VA facility’s annual salary rate for a Nurse I, Level 1, Step 1.  (At the James A. Haley VA this will be 80% of $47,553.00 or $18.28/hour). No future obligations to the VA, or guarantees from the VA will be incurred as a result of participating in this program.  However, the Nursing VALOR participant who is selected for VA employment after graduation may be eligible for a salary rate above the minimum, based on superior qualifications as evidenced by their successful completion of this program.  Employment opportunities vary with each VA facility.

Only completed packets will be accepted and must be received on or before Friday, March 8, 2013 to be considered.

APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE:  Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.)  Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  Applicants can verify accreditation at the following website: All education claimed by applicants will be verified by the appointing agency accordingly.  If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education.
