The Food and Drug Administration is the premier scientific regulatory agency responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable, as well as publishing accurate, science-based information the public needs in order to use medicines and foods to improve their health.  This Internship falls under GS-0899 Engineer/Architecture (Biomedical/Chemical/Electrical Engineering).  Internship positions may be in various locations.  The Centers that undertake the scientific and regulatory charge of safety are:

The Pathways Program offers clear paths to Federal careers for students from high school through post graduate school through three paths: the Intership Program, the Recent Graduates Program, and the Presidential Management Fellows Program.  The Pathways Internship Program offers opportunity to start a career in scientific, professional, technical, and administrative positions that support the mission of the Food and Drug Adminstration.

As a Student Trainee in the Pathway's Internship Program, you will be engaged in administrative, technical, or scientific work that engages you in the regulatory and scientific mandate of the Food and Drug Administration while illustrating the ways in which your pursuit of education in various academic disciplines can contribute to protecting the public health of the nation.  Assignments will vary based on your level of education, academic discipline, and FDA Center or Office to which assigned.  Characteristic assignments may include:

·         Data collection, analysis and review, and summarizing information on requests, evaluations, regulatory actions.

·         Development of charts, graphs, and tables to inform or guide affected staff or representatives of regulated industries of applications, issues raised, decision points, and outcomes of requests or required actions.

·         Research a range of information from a variety of sources to prepare documents, analyses, presentation points, or other support information for action or decision by specialists or scientists.

·         Preparation of correspondence, form content, and/or reports to support specific actions, report of progress on projects, milestones of accomplishments, and results or achievements.

To qualify for Student Trainee positions under the Pathways Internship Program, you must demonstrate that you meet the eligibility criteria to be identified as a student and that you meet the qualification requirement based on education completed that corresponds to the grade level at which considered.

To be a STUDENT you must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, as a degree student; be undertaking a two-year or four-year program at least half-time; be taking an academic, vocational, or technical course load in an accredited educational institution; maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.8; and be pursuing any of the following academic degrees:


·          High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

·          Vocational/Technical Certificate (two-year program)

·          Associate's Degree

·          Baccalaureate Degree

·          Graduate Degree (Master's program)

·          Professional Degree (Doctoral program)

Verfication of student status and education level must be submitted as supporting documentation to your application.

For the GS-3 grade level, you must complete one full academic year of post-high school study.

For the GS-4 grade level, you must complete 2 full academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree at an accredited college or university.

For the GS-5 grade level, you must complete all requirements for a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university.

For the GS-7 grade level, you must complete 1 full academic year of graduate level education or eligibilty under Superior Academic Achievement after completing a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university.

For the GS-9 grade level, you must complete all requirements for a master's degree or equivalent degree.

For the GS-11 grade level, you must complete, if this is a research position, all requirements for a master's or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university, or, if this is a non-research position, all requirements for a PhD or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION: Program participants may be non-competitively converted to a career-conditional, career, or term position but there is no requirement to do so.  If not converted at the completion of the academic program, the appointment ends, and the Intern is terminated.


To be eligible for conversion, the Intern must:


  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Meet the OPM qualification standards for the position to which he or she will be converted
  • Have completed academic study from a qualifying institution
  • Have completed a minimum of 640 hours of work experience while in the Internship program;  Up to 320 hours may be credited from other qualifying federal Internships or non-federal work experience toward the 640 hours
  • Receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the Agency
