Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) is one of the largest integrated health care systems in the Department of Veterans Affairs and includes facilities in Temple, Waco, and Austin, TX.  Community-Based Outpatient Clinics are located in Brownwood, Cedar Park, Palestine, and Bryan-College Station.

This is a bargaining position.

 

Tours of Duty:  VARIOUS TOURS 7 DAYS A WEEK (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., 3:30 p.m. to 12 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

DUTIES: Incumbent is assigned to the Escort Section of Nursing Service.  Provides patient transportation and care within the CTVHCS.   Provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, spiritual, chronological, recreational, and diverse needs of the adult (ages 17-59) or geriatric (ages 60+) patient.   Transports adult and geriatric patients to and from units, clinics, and facilities within CTVHCS and the local community.  Takes direction from the registered nurse regarding methods of transfer.  Observes and monitors patients and communicates and documents care given during the transportation process.  Reports status of patients and changes noted to the registered nurse at destination.  Recognizes emergency situations (i.e., codes, disasters, and fire and safety issues) and takes appropriate and immediate action.  Can successfully perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver.  Performs a wide range of treatments/procedures for adult and geriatric patients who are medically, surgically, and/or psychiatrically ill.  Carefully observes patients during transport for signs of distress.  Administers oxygen as ordered.  Utilizes personal protective equipment when implementing standard precautions to provide direct patient care.  Interacts appropriately with adult and geriatric patients.  Remains calm during stressful situations.  Utilizes proper channels of communication.   Transports specimens, records, medications, and other patient support equipment and supplies between and to patient care units as needed. 

 Physical Demands:  On a daily basis, position requires that the incumbent lift, stand, push, walk, bend, stoop, and transfer patients.  Incumbent must be emotionally stable and able to adjust to different types of personalities/behaviors using cheerfulness, compassion, courtesy, and empathy.  Incumbent must be quick and dependable in taking emergency action. 

Work Environment:  Incumbent performs duties on patient care units on any tour of duty in a hospital environment requiring normal safety precautions.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSQualifications are derived from the Office of Personnel Management Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions (GS-621 series), available in Human Resources Management Service (HRMS). Must have at least one year specialized experience or a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with courses related to the occupation.

 

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position to be filled and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, such as ability to perform suctioning, sterile urethral catheterizations and sterile dressing changes.

    Appointees to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7407(d).

    Time-in-Grade Restriction - Applicants who are current or former Federal employees must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For the GS-7 level, these applicants must have held at least the GS-6 grade or higher for one (1) year (52 weeks). The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service.
