JOB SUMMARY:

There is one vacancy available in Fort Worth, Texas. This vacancy is located in the Technical Support Division, Large Office Branch, Texas group.

International Technology Services (ITS) is an organization within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Office of the Chief information Officer (OCIO). Its prime directive is to meet the business needs of service center agencies within the USDA by providing outstanding customer service in the form of infrastructure support, as well as assistance in the field of information technology. Among the many services provided by ITS are hardware/software acquisition, infrastructure security operations and management, telecommunications, and help desk support.      The following are the duties of this position at the GS-11 level. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position. As an IT Specialist, you will:

    • Manage workstation operating systems to include the troubleshooting and installation of upgrades, patches, and security files.
    • Perform workstation maintenance to include troubleshooting hardware failure, resolving workstation issues and problems, and replacing workstation components.
    • Implement and carryout inventory disposition and deployment and keeps inventory database up-to-date.
    • Perform server software installations. Perform server system administration and support including monitoring and restoring backups
    • Provide support on remote access (e.g. dialup, VPN), workstation remote access network server connectivity, and workstation connectivity to include troubleshooting, basic setup, and maintenance.
    • Provide data network support to users by troubleshooting network issues, isolating problems with network components, performing setup and maintenance, and support cable installations as needed.
    • Provide support and maintenance for a variety of printer and network copier issues.
    • Provide support to users with telephony issues to include moving phones, connecting phones, and isolating phone and fax system problems.
    • Provide user account support.
    • Order equipment and supplies verifying credit card purchases and accounting codes in a purchase card management system.
    • Create backup files for users on workstations and servers.

    Specialized Experience:

    For GS-11 level: You must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of IT support, deployment and customer service requirements and techniques pertinent to providing IT customer support.  This knowledge is generally demonstrated by assignments where you analyzed a number of alternative approaches and suggested responses to IT issues, problems and concerns.  AND  Experience independently providing various information technology customer services and support such as:  providing user account support to include setup and configuration; performing systems administration and troubleshooting support; addressing, investigating, and resolving workstation security issues;  performing installation and configuration of complex software; performing imaging, installation, and deployment of workstations and servers; and installation and deployment of peripherals.

    For GS-09 level: You must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of IT support, deployment and customer service requirements and techniques. AND  Experience assisting senior specialists with providing various information technology customer services and support such as:  providing user account support to include setup and configuration; performing systems administration and troubleshooting support; addressing, investigating, and resolving workstation security issues; performing installation and configuration of complex software ; performing imaging, installation and deployment of workstations and servers; and installation and deployment of peripherals.

    In addition to meeting specialized experience, applicants must also show proficiency in 1) attention to detail, 2) customer service, 3) oral communication, and 4) problem solving.

    Education:
    You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:

    For the GS-11 level: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. (In order to be creditable, education must be related to the position being filled with a major study of computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.) Attach a copy of transcript or list of college courses designating semester or quarter hours earned to ensure proper credit.

    For the GS-09 level: A masters or equivalent degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. (In order to be creditable, education must be related to the position being filled with a major study of computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.) Attach a copy of transcript or list of college courses designating semester or quarter hours earned to ensure proper credit.

    Notes: The experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be evaluated by a credentialing agency.
