Basic Requirements: Applicants must possess a degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed AND must possess an active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (NOTE: A copy of your current registration as a professional nurse MUST be submitted with your resume. Failure to provide the required documents will render you not eligible for consideration).
In addition, your resume must reflect the following experience:
For GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector working as a professional nurse; or you successfully completed a professional nursing program or one full year of graduate education or bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. (Note - Successfully completed undergraduate course work in nursing; the behavioral, physical, or biological sciences related to nursing; nutrition; public health; and maternal and child health in excess of that required for completion of an associate degree may be substituted for professional nursing experience at the rate of 1 academic year for 9 months of experience).
For GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector; or you completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. (Note - Successfully completed undergraduate course work in nursing; the behavioral, physical, or biological sciences related to nursing; nutrition; public health; and maternal and child health in excess of that required for completion of an associate degree may be substituted for professional nursing experience at the rate of 1 academic year for 9 months of experience).
Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques in the service line patient population; developing patient plan of care; understanding of diagnosis and treatment regimens; follow patient progress toward discharge; promoting patient and family involvement in the total plan of care within a Labor and Delivery Unit.
For GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector; or you possess doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: providing a high degree of technical and complex specialized nursing care for high-risk and socially fragile patients in a Labor and Delivery Unit. Nursing care includes: in service line patient population; recognition, assessment and management of difficult situations; application of sound communication and counseling techniques; application of factors (i.e. physical, emotional, cultural, social and medical) that are common to the special patient population; ability to teach and/or perform all skills expected of subordinates; explain purpose and outcome of therapies and instruction of proper self-care techniques.

Work requires extensive walking, standing, stretching, lifting, transporting and bending in caring for patients; the ability to influence confused patients regarding their care, and physically control or defend against emotionally ill or confused patients. Work is performed in a health care setting where there is exposure to contagious disease, radiation, infection. Gloves, gowns and masks are frequently necessary.
Employee will be assigned to a permanent shift, (8, 10, or 12 hours) but duties, clinical or clerical activities, or patient care needs may require you to be available at other times. Weekend and holiday work will be scheduled as necessary. Additionally, there may be times when the employee's skills may be necessary to cover absences or augment staff in other related areas for which qualified to work.
