This position is located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas. This position functions in the TeleCare Section of the Clinical Practice Office. The primary functions of the Telephone Call Center Pharmacy Technician, includes providing direct and comprehensive telephone support for Veteran patients in regards to prescription related logistical and availability issues and concerns.  The duties includes but are not limited to:  receives and answers basic questions regarding new prescription availability, refills and mailed prescription status;  resolves issues related  to administrative support of MEDVAMC pharmacy and other related services to Veterans, Veteran family members, the public, and VA employees; verifies and updates demographic information for the Veterans; monitors and address inappropriate prescription refill requests; reviews computer medication profile for prescription duplication, therapeutic duplication, and inappropriate and allergies/adverse drug reactions; provides patient education via telephone on the medication refill process; provides secondary review for the Pharmacist by reviewing the order of patient allergies, eligibility, dosage, and instructions; displays a thorough knowledge of the pharmacy procedures, practices and policies; and performs other related duties as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Extended periods of sitting or standing, walking to restock medication, troubleshoot equipment, and perform quality assurance reports.  Procurement activities also involve bending, stooping to stock shelves; some of work is sedentary at computer workstation.  Physical demands of the position include lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 lbs) and delivery of loaded carts between pharmacy and ward areas.  Position duties involve some exposure to compounding reagents.  The incumbent is required to have average agility and dexterity.  Endurance of very stressful periods may be required due to uncontrollable workload demands.  Professional appearance, attitude and demeanor are required.

Basic Requirements: Citizenship - Citizen of the United States. 

 

GS-5 Education/Experience:  Candidates must meet all the requirements identified in the OPM Qualification Standards Handbook for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions, GS-661 Pharmacy Technician Series (TS-2), dated August 1994.  At the GS-5 level, candidates must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level or a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses.

 

Specialized experience is experience which has equipped the applicant with the particular Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and is typically in or related to the position to be filled.  Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories.  Experience must have provided basic knowledge of:  1) Pharmaceutical nomenclature; 2) Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; 3) Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; 4) Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals. 

 

NOTE:  Although candidates are not required to individually address each KSA listed above, application packages must provide sufficient information to clearly demonstrate possession of the required KSAs, since they are part of the minimum qualification requirements for the position.
