JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Emerging Respiratory Viruses Section (ERVS) of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

As a Microbiologist you will serve as a senior research assistant in support of the research activities of the laboratory.  Additionally, you will perform the following duties and functions:

  • Independently plan, develop, implement, and manage all assigned experiments and protocols.
  • Evaluate progress of experiments to ensure that they are proceeding as planned.
  • Develop new methods for and collect, analyze, organize and record experimental data appropriate for publication and future references by others.
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including coordinating activities of diverse laboratory research projects and personnel, and ensuring availability of equipment and supplies.

In order to meet the minimum qualification requirements for this position, you must possess and describe the following:

Basic Requirements:

A) Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

B) Combination of education and experience:  courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

 

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience  equivalent to at least the GS- 11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing veterinary microbiological diagnostic services in a reference laboratory serving other laboratories; preparing standards of identity, strength, quality and purity, as well as test methods to be used, for antibiotic drugs; conducting non-standard tests and assays of antibiotics; and participating with higher grade microbiologists in the inspection of antibiotic production facilities.
