JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:

This position is located at J. Strom Thurmond Lake, which is in Clarks Hill, South Carolina.
This is a Department of the Army Pathways Student Internship Announcement.  Are you looking for a unique opportunity to gain valuable work experience? An Internship offers challenging work and the opportunity to gain "real world" experience.

The Internship offers valuable work experience directly related to your academic field of study or career goals. As an Intern, you will be given the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to pursue a successful career with the US Army Corps of Engineers upon completing your degree, certificate or diploma and meeting conversion eligibility requirements. However, it is important to remember that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee you will be offered a permanent position.

 

Internship appointments made under this announcement may be extended or may be non-competitively converted to permanent positions without further competition.

To be eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position, Interns must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements
  • Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and;
  • Perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations and/or completion of an Individual Development Plan (IDP)

Performing visitor assistance, land & boat patrols, recreation area management, customer satisfaction surveys, conducting interpretive programs, volunteer coordination, visitation estimation procedures, water safety programs, recreation user fee collections, water quality monitoring, permitting activities on public land, timber management and fisheries/wildlife management.

EligibilityApplicants must meet the definition of a Student - be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school with a projected graduation date of no sooner than December 2013. Individuals who are enrolled must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course load leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. "Half-time" is defined by the school in which the student is enrolled.

 

Qualifications for the GS-04:

Experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical, or trades and crafts work is also qualifying if pertinent to the position to be filled. Experience of a routine nature, such as typing, filing, maintaining records, or other nonspecialized tasks is not qualifying. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work.

EDUCATION:

Two years of education above high school (60 semester hour or 90 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 12 semester hours of course work in a related field, and I do not have the experience described in A above. Related course work are subjects such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying.
