This service will be in support of a new program in New York City.  Press release is here: This is volunteer service which offers opportunities to work directly with the Innovation and Outreach Coordinator on various projects specific to that initiative. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to experience what it's like to work for a federal agency, as well as interact with experts in several disciplines, explore opportunities and develop or enhance personal and professional skills.

Externs will directly support the Innovation and Outreach Coordinator in the New York City region by:

  • Creating a website for the various projects and programs being developed by the USPTO and Cornell’s NYC Tech Campus
  • Collaborating with local universities to identify how the USPTO/Department of Commerce can assist in accelerating technology transfer
  • Developing focused training material for Start-Ups which will enable them to learn about intellectual property
  • Helping to develop and assist with programming in New York City 

Additionally, externs must be self-directed and capable of working independently in an office environment.

There is no particular qualification standard set forth for the unpaid student extern position.

There is no particular General Schedule (GS) designation for this volunteer service to the USPTO, however, participants will gain valuable work experience.

In addition to submitting a resume or narrative describing their work and/or educational experience, students must provide a writing sample of no more than 5 pages.

Students may either submit a prepared sample or answer the following questions:

  1. How would you define an entrepreneur?
  2. Can you provide an example of a time when you acted as an entrepreneur?

Additionally, students must sign a Participant Agreement, if hired.


Your eligibility for consideration for the position will be determined based upon a review of your detailed resume and your writing sample.
