Incumbent will serve as an IT Specialist in the Enterprise Systems Division of the Office of Information Systems Management (OISM) for the National Institute of Standards & Technology. Primary responsibility is to install, maintain, optimize and troubleshoot the Gaithersburg network-based VMware, ESX, Storage Area Network (SAN), Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft SQLServer hardware and software infrastructure to ensure high levels of availability and security. This includes managing servers that support Tivoli Endpoint Manager infrastructure.

IT Specialist responsibilities include server hardware installation and maintenance; VMware ESX 5 administration; Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 administration; Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2012 administration; SAN Management; Active Directory administration; and configuration, optimization, and upgrades following industry best practices. Perform standard configuration, management, and maintenance tasks for related file systems, input/output systems, networking, clustering, storage, and applications. Perform test system configuration backups and restores to ensure system recovery from error or outage. Perform test backups and restores with the storage team where present, to ensure full data retrieval. Review and deploy system releases and vendor-supplied patches according to best practices. Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software problems on all systems.

Collaborate in the identification of critical requirements and information technology management practices, challenges, and solutions. Incumbent will participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure system provisioning and maintenance consistent with OISM goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.

ZP IV qualifications - YOU MUST HAVE ONE YEAR OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE EQUIVALENT TO THE NEXT LOWER GRADE (GS-12 or ZP-III AT NIST)  in VMware ESX 5 administration, Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 administration, Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2013, SAN Managemernt.

  • Ability to manage server hardware.
  • Ability to administer Active Directory Group Policy, and to diagnose and troubleshoot and diagnose problems with Microsoft Windows server related to Active Directory.
  • Ability to oversee all aspects of VMware ESX infrastructure management.
  • Ability to manage SAN and Brocade fiber switches that are used for storage by the VMware virtual infrastructure as well as the webservers, Microsoft SQL servers, or any server requiring high-speed fault tolerant storage.
  • Ability to setup and maintain the Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2012 and Active Directory domain controllers that support Tivoli Endpoint Manager infrastructure.
