This position serves as a Food Service Worker within Nutrition and Food Services located at the VA Health Care System in Memphis, TN. The employee is responsible for applying knowledge of special procedures in food preparation, serving patients, and food service areas in the Medical Center. The major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assembling and/or portioning salads,desserts, cold liquids, cold entrée plates according to the menu and/or production sheets;
  • Assisting in preparing fresh fruit and vegetables by cleaning, peeling, dicing, chopping, slicing, etc;
  • Assisting in the receiving of food and other non-subsistence product deliveries by loading or unloading containers;
  • Breaking down and cleaning station after meal service;
  • Delivering supplemental feedings to patients' bedside and/or ward refrigerators;
  • Transporting loaded food carts to and from wards using service elevator;
  • Delivering trays to patients' bedside and/or dining room;
  • Collecting soiled trays and transporting them to dish washing area;
  • Operating microwave oven to heat food and operating coffee machine to brew coffee according to the number of servings required;
  • Working in dish washing area of the main kitchen following standard dish washing procedures;
  • Pre-soaking pots and pans, operating pot and pan machine, scouring and sanitizing heavy cooking utensils and equipment such as steamers, ovens, grills, slicers, mixers, kettles, etc.;
  • Performing a variety of general sanitation duties in the main kitchen area, such as mopping floors, cleaning refrigerators, cabinets, and drawers, washing tile walls, sanitizing counter tops, table tops, etc.;
  • Operating automatic floor scrubber and cleaning it after use; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, (6:00am  -2:30pm, 6:30am - 3:00pm, 11:30am - 8:00pm), holidays, weekends and rotating days off..

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (  For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1).  Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements.   While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

Physical Effort and Work Conditions: Subject to continuous walking, standing and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing pulling and bending. Frequent lifting or moving objects weighing up to 40 pounds, is routine. The selectee may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering cooking supplies. The selectee may be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment.

The work of this position is performed in a kitchen setting where the steam and heat from cooking and dish washing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lit, but usually noisy from food service activities. There is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Regular exposure to hot trays and liquids, sharp cutting blades, and extreme temperature changes when entering work-in-refrigeration or freezing units is common

  • Best Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that substantially exceed the minimum qualifications of the position and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
  • Well Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that exceed the minimum qualification of the position and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
  • Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
