JOB SUMMARY:

National Park Service - Experience Your America

This position is a full-time temporary position not-to-exceed 1039 hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

 

The position is located in Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, ME.  Weather is typical of the coastal maritime region, with daytime temperatures ranging from the 40s in the spring to the low 80s in the summer months and into the early fall.  Work occurs from sea level to 1,530 feet.  Park headquarters is located about four miles outside of Bar Harbor, Maine.  Essential amenities (groceries, churches, clothing, schools, and medical services) can be found in the neighboring communities of Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Ellsworth.

As a Physical Science Technician at Acadia National Park you will work with both the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program and the Resource Management team on water and air resource programs. 

  • Water resources work will include taking field measurements of water quality parameters such as pH, conductivity, temperature, clarity, dissolved oxygen, and water quantity in park lakes and streams; collecting water samples for chemical and bacteriological analysis at contract labs; and collecting samples of benthic stream macroinvertebrates;
  • Air resources work will include operational checks, maintenance, and calibration of visibility, particulate, deposition, and climatological sampling equipment.
  • Additional duties include calibrating and maintaining equipment; conducting laboratory analyses; entering information into electronic databases and spreadsheets; and collaborating with other state, Federal, and private cooperators/researchers working with the park on monitoring programs or research investigations

 

Physical demands:  You will regularly need to conduct activities outside, which will often entail standing, bending, lifting, and carrying heavy objects, as well as hiking over rough or sandy terrain, steep slopes, or within chest deep water.  Field protocols may require some sampling in areas of heavy poison ivy and high densities of biting insects; during hot, humid, wet and/or windy weather, and/or winter conditions.  Other work must be conducted from a canoe or small watercraft; portaging the canoe and other field gear will also be required.  Approximately 15% of your time will be in an indoor setting.

In order to be qualified at the GS-05 level, you must possess one of the following: 

A.  Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science (e.g. chemistry, physics, engineering, etc.), or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following: physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.   - OR -

B.  Possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service, assisting with the implementation of natural resource management projects such as field surveys or inventories; collecting and recording scientific data using established techniques; and conducting research to gather information for use in scientific or technical reports.  - OR -

C. Possess a combination of education as described in A and specialized experience as described in B that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement.  (Please note that only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours may be used in this calculation.)

Requirements

1. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.

2.  Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid State driver's license is required. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. If you are tentatively selected for employment in this position, you will be required to complete GSA Form 3607 and submit the above State issued documents. Your employment, after your tentative selection, will be contingent upon receipt of these documents in a timely manner and that those documents establish, to the satisfaction of the selecting official, that you possess a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs) 

1. Knowledge of collecting, analyzing, and compiling chemical, hydrological, and biological data as part of a multidisciplinary water quality program.  

2. Skill in monitoring and analyzing a variety of air quality constituents including gaseous pollutants, fine particulates, and atmospheric deposition. 

3. Ability to conduct assignments safely in field and office settings.

4. Ability to participate as a member of natural resource program, and provide effective oral and written communication in a polite and pleasant manner with employees, supervisors, program partners and the public.

 

CATEGORY RATING PROCEDURES WILL BE USED TO RATE AND RANK CANDIDATES FOR THIS POSITION.
