This is a Student Internship opportunity under the Pathways Program.

NIST currently has an internship position located in the Physical Measurement Laboratory, Sensor Science Division, Thermodynamic Metrology Group and will assist with acoustic thermometer development.

The student selected to fill this vacancy will assist in the assembly of the next version of the acoustic thermometer, perform measurements of the T-T90 using the acoustic thermometer, and analyze the results of measurements using spreadsheets.

To qualify, applicants must be pursuing a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that includes courses in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

To be eligible for an Internship opportunity you must meet one of the following criteria:

You must be a current student enrolled at least half time in:

  • An accredited high school
  • A College (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges)
  • A Professional, technical, vocational, and trade school
  • An advanced degree program
  • Or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

You will be in a trial period throughout your entire Pathways appointment.   If selected by management, you may be required to complete a Declaration for Federal Employment (OF-306) to determine your suitability for federal employment and to authorize a background investigation. This position is covered by an Alternative Personnel Management System (APMS). This system replaces the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and grades with career paths and pay bands. This is a temporary appointment.  The incumbent may be converted, without a break in service to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon graduation and completion of program requirements.
