These Psychologist positions are assigned to the Mental Health Service Line located at the VA Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC. Positions may be located in an inpatient or outpatient setting. Inpatient/Outpatient Mental Health programs may include General Mental Health, PTSD/SUD, Local Recovery Coordination, PSTD Trauma Recovery, Military Sexual Trauma and Substance Abuse), Home Based Primary Care, and other programs as assigned.

Excellent opportunities exist for Psychologist positions at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center. These positions are aligned under the Mental Health Service.  The Psychologist applies advanced strategies to a full range of patient problems in his/her work setting.  He/she has advanced knowledge of culturally sensitive psychological assessment techniques, diagnosis, intervention, and behavioral health that qualifies him/her to provide advice and consultation to professional representing a variety of disciplines.  The primary job functions of the incumbent include the provision of direct psychologist patient care, consultation services on difficult or complex cases, education of staff and trainee supervision The incumbent functions in accordance with the policies, principals, professional ethic and techniques of accepted Psychology practice.

Alternate tour of duty may be required.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:   Group Coverage Qualification Standards for Professional and Scientific Positions, VA Handbook 5005, and Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0180.  Qualification Standards are available for review in HRMS.



Citizenship:  Citizen of the United States.

Degree: Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in Psychology from a college or university approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, have completed study for such degree in a specialty area of psychology and have completed a one year internship which is satisfactory to the Secretary, and be licensed or certified as a Psychologist in a State.

1.  Approved doctoral programs are those from an accredited college or university whose curriculum in clinical psychology is approved at the time of applicant's graduation by the American Psychological Association (APA).  TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED.

2.  The internship requirement is a vital and integral part of the basic requirements and as such must be fully and carefully evaluated.  Acceptable internships consist of an organized training program, in contrast to supervised experience or on-the-job training, designed to provide the intern with a planned, programmed sequence of training experiences with the primary purpose to assure breadth and quality of training.  Such internships may be gained in VA training programs which meet American Psychological Association (APA) internship requirements or in other health service settings whose internships are accredited by the APA.  Internships normally consist of 1 year training under a licensed psychologist in an organization with sufficient staff and varied programs to provide the required breadth and quality of training.  The sponsoring organization should provide a written statement or brochure describing the goals and content of the internship with clear expectations for the quality of the trainee's work.  NOTE:  Prior to 1956, the APA did not accredit internships, but did accredit doctoral programs.  Therefore, a pre-1956 graduate of an APA approved doctoral program in an appropriate psychology specialty, whose internship was acceptable to the degree granting school, meets the internship requirements of this standard.

3.  Appointing officers may accept applications from and appoint unlicensed or uncertified candidates who have successfully completed the educational requirements subject to obtaining the required licensure or certification within 2 years following entry on duty.  THOSE WHO FAIL TO OBTAIN STATE LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION WITHIN THE REQUIRED TIME FRAMES MAY BE REMOVED.  THIS MAY RESULT IN TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT.



GS-13 level applicants must possess two years of postdoctoral experience appropriate to the specialty area of the position.  For the clinical and counseling specialties, the experience must have been gained in a professional program concerned with health, rehabilitation, or vocational restoration.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  The experience must indicate the applicant's ability to perform the duties of a psychologist in the area of work and at the level of difficulty and responsibility of the grade for which being considered.


QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE:  The required amount of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position.  Your record of education and experience must clearly demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of the position.   The primary consideration is the quality and level of experience.  Part time experience will be prorated in calculating the amount of qualifying experience.
